NBDC Student Worker
Position Title: NBDC Student Worker
Seeking: Departmental (100% Department funded)
Department: Nebraska Business Development Center (NBDC)
Location: 119 Burkhiser Complex
Brief description of duties: The following job duties for the NBDC Departmental Student Worker result in high-impact learning. • Each client consultation is attended by the NBDC Departmental Student Worker, the NBDC OA, and the NBDC Center Administrator. This “learning-outside-the-classroom” experience through a hands-on engagement benefits the NBDC Departmental Student Worker. The NBDC Departmental Student Worker is subjected to high-impact experiential student learning by helping with consulting with his prior knowledge and experiences. The NBDC GA can apply his prior knowledge to real-world business problems, concerns, and fears. The NBDC Departmental Student Worker explores solutions with the client and the Administrator of the NBDC with his prior knowledge of management, marketing, and financial management. The client consultation is far more dynamic and vibrant than reading case studies in business. This active learning process promotes deep learning and student engagement. The NBDC Departmental Student Worker has an opportunity for critical thinking in the area of business and helps provide business solutions for each client. • The NBDC Departmental Student Worker is put in a position of service to the client. The service may include researching the industry, helping adjust the financials for the business, and making helpful comments during the client meeting. • The NBDC Departmental Student Worker learns how to become a business consultant by doing, by reflecting on doing, by speaking during meetings, and by writing after meetings. This is high-impact experiential student learning at its very best. • The NBDC Departmental Student Worker writes a meeting summary with details after each client meeting. Summarization of details is a key experiential student learning assignment. It promotes the reflection required for high-impact experiential learning. • The NBDC Departmental Student Worker enters client information into our CRM database called Neoserra. This is learning a discipline necessary for good records management. • The NBDC Departmental Student Worker makes follow-up calls. When/If the client starts the business, the NBDC Departmental Student Worker receives satisfaction, knowing that he helped start a business or expand a business that then helps the community. This emotional reward cements this event into the student’s memory. A memorable event takes place that improves high-impact experiential student learning. • NBDC Chadron metrics are recorded by the NBDC Departmental Student Worker. Because of the database, the student can see real numbers on the dashboard showing the impact of the NBDC Chadron. The metrics are clients advised, new business starts, jobs, total capital infusion, and the total number of underserved rural clients counseled and/or trained. These real numbers, reflecting facts on real clients, and using real money to start or expand their businesses, further cement the high-impact experiential student learning process. • Because NBDC clients are real people risking real money to start or expand their businesses, the NBDC Departmental Student Worker is required to maintain absolute confidentiality. This, too, is part of life-learning, and part of the high-impact experiential student learning.
