Stadium dedication leads CSC's 2018 highlights

CHADRON – The dedication of the Sports Complex Sept. 15 led a long list of Chadron State College achievements in 2018. A renovation of Elliott Field, Beebe Stadium and the Marshall Press Box was completed in time for the Eagles to debut the $8.6 million facility Sept. 1. In November, the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees approved funding for the second phase of the project, a $1.8 million track facility.

Commencement speakers advise graduates to be honest, take risks

CHADRON – More than 200 Chadron State College graduates were recognized during two Winter Commencement ceremonies Friday. Dr. Rob Stack, professor of mathematics, spoke to the master’s degree recipients while Judge Russell Harford addressed undergraduates.

CSC participates in clothing drive

CHADRON – The Chadron State College community responded with generosity when the Professional Staff Association (PSA) sent a request in mid-November asking faculty and staff to donate winter clothing for local children. A month later, PSA reported that 134 pairs of socks, 116 pairs of gloves, 104 hats and 25 pairs of mittens were donated. Additional contributions included two infant snowsuits, two pairs of toddler pajamas, four scarves and one coat.

CSC expects 238 to graduate Friday

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Winter Commencement for graduate and undergraduate students is Friday, Dec. 14. The graduate ceremony is at 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium with Dr. Robert Stack as the speaker. The undergraduate ceremony is at 4 p.m. in the Chicoine Center with Judge Russell Harford as the speaker. There are 79 candidates for master’s degrees and 159 candidates for bachelor’s degrees. Both events can be seen on CSC Live.

Stein receives award for service member support

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Director of Admission Lisa Stein recently received a Service Member Patriot Award. Stein was nominated for the award by Admissions Representative Heidi McClintock in recognition of Stein's support of McClintock, a public affairs specialist with the Nebraska Army National Guard’s Main Command Post Operational Detachment, First Infantry Division.

CHADRON – Volunteers with the Chadron State Foundation’s annual Fall Fund Drive celebrated the conclusion of the drive with pledges in the amount of $103,875 at a reception in the Vern and Erma Lewellen Family Hospitality Suite in the Con Marshall Press Box in early November.

Classes canceled, offices closed Wednesday

CHADRON -- The Nebraska State Colleges will not hold classes and business offices will be closed Wednesday as part of the National Day of Mourning. In the announcement made Tuesday, Nebraska State College System Chancellor Stan Carpenter said the observance is to honor and pay respect to the late President George Herbert Walker Bush who dedicated his life to service to his country. Gov. Pete Ricketts has also closed Nebraska state offices Wednesday.

CHADRON – Chadron State College students enrolled in Dr. Teresa Frink’s Wildlife Research and Management Techniques (AGRI 426) course are helping two government agencies with a bat monitoring project to gain a better understanding of local populations regarding conservation and viability.

Powwow deemed a success

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Mari Sandoz Wacipi (Powwow) welcomed 51 dancers and eight drum groups comprised of 42 singers, to campus in mid-November. Twenty-five dancers were teenagers or younger, according to Native American Club sponsor Dr. Dave Nesheim. Chris Eagle Hawk was Master of Ceremonies and Melvin Young Bear was Arena Director. Lisa and Kristy Young Bear were registration and tabulation coordinators.

CHADRON –The Big Event staff at Chadron State College conducted its inaugural Mini Big Event Thursday, Nov. 15, in Chadron. Eleven members of The Big Event staff, including nine students, graduate assistant Kelsey Brummels and Faculty Adviser Dr. Shaunda French-Collins, volunteered and completed five jobsites in three hours.

Eagle Ridge wins architectural award

CHADRON – The Eagle Ridge student housing project has won a Nebraska Honor award, the highest level offered by the American Institute of Architects. This is the second award for a Chadron State College project designed by BVH Architecture of Lincoln. The Rangeland Lab won in April 2017.

Social Work program receives $50,000 in anonymous gifts

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Social Work annual conference, started in 2008, has received two $10,000 gifts from an anonymous donor, according to Social Work professor Bruce Hoem. In addition, the donor has invested $30,000 in an endowed scholarship for social work majors.

Wentworth earns Lifetime Achievement Award

CHADRON – Chadron State College Mathematics Professor Dr. Beth Wentworth recently received the Milton W. Beckman Lifetime Achievement Award at the Nebraska Association of Teachers of Mathematics (NATM) annual conference in Kearney. The NATM board established the award in 1989 to honor outstanding educators who have spent their careers working to improve mathematics education in Nebraska.

CHADRON – Bryony Trump’s solo clarinet recital Sunday, Sept. 30, at Chadron State College will be more than fulfilling a graduation requirement. Her performance will also represent months of recovery from a rollover accident north of her home in Sterling, Colorado. CHADRON – Two Chadron State College graduates from the 1980s, Judge Russell W. Harford of Chadron and Dr. James Jaggers of Aurora, Colorado, will be honored for achievements in their professions and demonstrating service to the college with the CSC Distinguished Alumni Award at a luncheon Saturday during the college’s Homecoming activities. Distinguished Young Alumni Awards will also be presented at the luncheon.

Professional adventurer to speak at CSC Sept. 27

CHADRON – Professional adventurer Brian O’Malley will speak at Chadron State College Thursday, Sept. 27. His presentation, “The Spirit of Adventure,” will be free and open to the public in the Student Center Ballroom at 7 p.m. According to Dr. Kim Madsen, whose First Year Inquiry course Survival Skills (FYI 169x) students selected O’Malley, his message reflects his experiences as a paramedic firefighter, mountain climber, SWAT officer, and paragliding pilot.

McCallum to ride from Canada to Mexico to raise awareness, funds

CHADRON – When Hank McCallum’s oldest son, Doug, left for a second tour of duty in Afghanistan, McCallum was impressed with the Maine Troop Greeters who cheered for his son as flew out of the Bangor airport in 2016 and greeted him when he returned. McCallum, a Chadron State College Associate Professor of Education, decided he wanted to support the Maine Troop Greeters so he came up with the idea of a motorcycle ride from Canada to Mexico.

CHADRON – After two years working to meet requirements, Dr. Lori Entzminger and Dr. John Buttiglieri, education faculty members, have successfully shepherded a student chapter of Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) into existence at Chadron State College. Entzminger and Buttiglieri co-sponsor the chapter, the second in Nebraska, and serve as advisers for the Education Club.

CHADRON—Winter weather decreased attendance at Chadron State College's annual Scholastic Day Contest Friday to nine high schools from the 42 that were expected and to 177 students from the nearly 1,150 who were expected.

Senior Art Show reception Friday

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Senior Art Show opened Monday, March 26, in Memorial Hall’s Main Gallery. The show, “Fourfold,” features the work of seniors Troi Arnold, Kendra Baucom, Taylor Juelfs, and Holly Real. The show will be open from March 26 to April 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. A reception for the artists will be Friday, April 6, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Child Development Center earns reaccreditation

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Child Development Center (CDC) recently qualified for its seventh reaccreditation since 1990. CDC Director Lona Downs said a team from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) completed a site visit in January as part of the five-year reaccreditation process.

LINCOLN, Neb.–Governor Pete Ricketts has appointed Chadron State College student Dawson Brunswick of McCook, Neb; Peru State College student Camarie Stratman of Hartington, Neb., and Wayne State College student Ria Pedersen of Hartington, Neb., to serve as student representatives on the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees. The students will serve during the 2018-2019 academic year.

CHADRON – Chadron State College plans for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday will include a Q&A session and lecture by Cheryl Brown Henderson, daughter of the late civil right leader Rev. Oliver L. Brown. Brown was part of Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, according to Dr. Dave Nesheim co-adviser of the CSC Social Science Club.
