Powell named Vice President for Academic Affairs

CHADRON – Dr. James Powell has been named Chadron State College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, President Randy Rhine announced Tuesday. Powell, the Dean of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences at Chadron State College, replaces Dr. Charles Snare, who announced his retirement in August. Powell will begin his duties Jan. 11, 2020.

Classes canceled for remainder of week; campus closed Tuesday and Wednesday

Beginning Monday, Nov. 25, at noon, all Chadron State College classes will be canceled for the remainder of the week due to the severe winter weather forecast. In addition, Chadron State College will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 26, and Wednesday, Nov. 27. Chadron State College was already scheduled to be closed Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

CHADRON — The District 12 National FFA Organization Leadership Contest was Nov. 20 at Chadron State College. Students from 16 Nebraska high schools competed for a chance to qualify for the 92nd Nebraska FFA State Convention in Lincoln in April 2020. First and second place winners in each event category qualified for the Nebraska state competition.

CHADRON – The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center is honoring Native American Heritage Month with an exhibit titled “Native American Legacies.” The exhibit includes three art installations and an informational display about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women now through Dec. 13. The Sandoz Center hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.

CHADRON – The Nebraska Department of Education has named Chadron State College alumna Megan (McNeil) Helberg the 2019-20 Teacher of the Year. Helberg is in her 10th year at Burwell Public Schools where she is also the head volleyball coach. She teaches eighth grade, junior and senior English.

Wilson to help lead BHECN Panhandle

CHADRON – Chadron State College will become a more integral partner in the state’s efforts to recruit and retain behavioral health professionals with the announcement of Dr. Tara Wilson, associate professor in Counseling, as co-director of the new Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) Panhandle. Dr. Cate Jones-Hazledine, a CSC adjunct faculty member, and licensed, private-practice psychologist based in Rushville, is the other co-director. Both co-directors will be part-time.

Applications available for CSCEA scholarship

CHADRON – Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 Chadron State College Education Association (CSCEA) Scholarship. The scholarship, funded by CSCEA faculty members, provides two $500 scholarships for the Spring 2020 semester. Dating and Domestic Violence Seminar set for Wednesday

CHADRON – Chadron State College will host a Dating and Domestic Violence seminar Wednesday in the Student Center’s Ballroom from 1 to 4 p.m. The conference, which includes keynote speakers Kathy O’Neil and Ron Blake and a panel of experts, is free and open to the public. All CSC Resident Advisors and other officers in specific clubs and organizations are required to attend, but it is open to other students, according to Associate Director of Residence Life Taylor Osmotherly.

Homecoming parade continues in spite of weather

CHADRON – A cool, steady rain did not stop the Chadron State College Homecoming parade Saturday. Nearly 20 entries participated in spite of the weather. Nebraska State College System Chancellor Paul Turman was unable to serve as the parade’s grand marshal as planned. He was traveling to Chadron with the Old Green Plane crew early Saturday morning when they stopped in Ord, according to Dr. Randy Rhine, CSC President, and could not continue west due to Instrument Flight Rules.

Sixth grade memory inspires CSC professor's poem

CHADRON – Vivid primary school memories of the acrid smell of blue ink used in mimeograph machines, and the hardship a dyslexic classmate faced in learning English grammar provided inspiration for "Mimeograph Blues" a poem by Chadron State College social work professor Rich Kenney that was published in the Summer 2019 edition of Plainsongs Literary Journal, a poetry magazine produced by Hastings College Press.

CHADRON – Chadron State College faculty and students are assisting with the Bioblitz, a learning event about biodiversity, at Chadron State Park on Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7. Events start Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 7 a.m., are free and designed for families. A valid Nebraska Game and Parks Commission permit is required for entry to the park.

Six new faculty hired

CHADRON – Six new faculty members will join the ranks at Chadron State College this fall. Two will be in Science, one in Education, and three in the Business Academy. They are: Dr. Rachelle Rider, Dr. Tawny Tibbits, Catherine Rust, Pil Joon Kim, Zunaira Khalid, and Chris McCarthy.

CHADRON – A trip to Indiana University's Lilly Library in May gave a Chadron State College student and a faculty member an opportunity to view and touch some of the historic pieces of literature that have shaped the culture of the English-speaking world, as well as a chance to access primary research materials for their writing projects.

Jones presents at international conference

CHADRON – English Assistant Professor Dr. Mary Clai Jones represented Chadron State College May 30-31 at a British Association of Victorian Studies conference in Italy. She presented a paper about the late English essayist Vernon Lee’s environmental activism. Vernon Lee was the pseudonym of Violet Paget, who died in 1935.

NSCS board approves new tuition rates

LINCOLN – The Board of Trustees for the Nebraska State College System (NSCS) unanimously voted to set tuition and fees for Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State Colleges for the next two years. Full-time students attending the State Colleges will pay an additional $4.50 per credit hour in tuition for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.

$28.5M Math Science Addition and Renovation Approved

LINCOLN – The renovation and addition of Chadron State College’s Math Science building is now a reality thanks to the recently approved budget by Nebraska State Senators and Gov. Pete Ricketts. CHADRON – Chadron State College Professor of Biology Dr. Joyce Phillips Hardy was selected by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to serve in a newly-formed, specialized corps of peer reviewers. Hardy was one of 16 higher education professionals nationwide chosen for the specialized training April 5 in Chicago. HLC accredits colleges and universities in the 19-state North Central region of the U.S. and peer reviewers.

Two students complete NASA Nebraska fellowships

CHADRON – Two Chadron State College students, Jessica Rowshandel of Encino, California, and Isaac Langan of McCook, Nebraska, recently completed research funded by NASA Nebraska Space Grant fellowships. Rowshandel studied analog mapping sites that mimic NASA’s Mars 2020 landing site and Langan researched nitrate, arsenic, and uranium levels in wells near Crawford, Nebraska.

CHADRON – Chadron State College student Gabrielle Brumfield of Pendleton, Indiana, won the Outstanding Undergraduate Research in Biomedical Sciences $500 award at the Nebraska Academy of Sciences meeting in Lincoln April 12. Bioblitz aims to increase students' appreciation of biodiversity

CHADRON – A recent bioblitz project aimed at increasing awareness of the biological diversity in the environment yielded about 40 specimens of insects, plants and mosses from C-Hill on the Chadron State College campus, despite spring storms that reduced participation and made planning for the event difficult, according to CSC professor Mathew Brust. He and other CSC science instructors intend to have more activities like the one April 6.

The Big Event adapts to overcome weather

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s seventh annual The Big Event had a first Saturday: it became the first one impacted by a snow storm. CSC announces RLOP participants

CHADRON – Five Nebraska students have been accepted into the Rural Law Opportunities Program (RLOP) at Chadron State College. They are Hunter Rathjen and Zach Kring of North Platte, Micah Stouffer of Chadron, TeAnna Tenopir of Waverly, Scott Wheeler of Imperial. Kring will join RLOP in 2020 after a deferral to complete a youth exchange program in Argentina.

Seven high schools to attend Best of the West competition

CHADRON – More than 100 students from seven high schools will participate in the Best of the West Business Invitational Wednesday, co-hosted by Chadron State College and the Nebraska Council on Economic Education. High schools attending will be Alliance, Arthur County, Bridgeport, Chadron, Hay Springs, Hemingford, and Ogallala, according to Assistant Professor of Business Dr. Gary Dusek who also works with the Nebraska Business Development Center that is coordinating logistics for the event.

CHADRON – As a candidate for governor in Minnesota, Tim Walz wanted to unite the state as “One Minnesota.” And following a successful campaign, Walz became the first Chadron State College graduate ever elected governor of one of the 50 states. After serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 years, Walz was sworn in as Minnesota’s 41st Governor Jan. 7 in St. Paul.

'Photos from the Rubble' showcases pioneer photography

CHADRON – The historical significance of Chadron’s pioneer photographers Ray and Faye Graves will be celebrated Sunday, Jan. 13 through March 29 in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center on the Chadron State College campus. “Photos from the Rubble” tells the story of approximately 1,100 glass plate negatives taken from 1906 to 1940 that were salvaged during the 1973 demolition of the Graves’ former studio.

CHADRON – Dr. Mathew Brust, professor of Natural Sciences at Chadron State College, will have his research work featured in an upcoming 112-page field guide. “Tiger Beetles of Minnesota, Wisconsin & Michigan,” produced by Kollath-Stensaas Publishing, will be released Feb. 15.
