Former professor, Dewing, dies in Washington

CHADRON – Dr. Rolland Dewing, a longtime Chadron State College professor and division chairman who also became well-known for his historical research and writing, died at his home in Renton, Washington, Saturday, Dec. 5. He was 86.

Ruleaux leaves a legacy of Native American art

CHADRON – Don Ruleaux, a former Chadron State College adjunct faculty member and 1996 recipient of the college’s Distinguished Service Award died Wednesday. He was 89. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art education in 1959 after studying with prominent African American artist William Artis while he was a member of the CSC faculty.

Chadron State Foundation completes annual Fall Fund Drive

CHADRON – The Chadron State Foundation’s annual Fall Fund Drive raised $101,984 for student scholarships and college programs in October. According to Jake Rissler, Chadron State Foundation Director of Development, more than 100 volunteers participated in the fund drive asking potential donors for contributions. The campus co-chairs were Shaunda French-Collins and Taylor Osmotherly. The community co-chairs were Gabby Michna and Trish Martens.

CHADRON – Chadron State College President Randy Rhine announced Wednesday that all CSC events and facilities are closed to the public until further notice to help reduce potential spread of COVID-19. This includes all college buildings, as well as equipment or materials located in the Nelson Physical Activity Center, the Sandoz Center, the Student Center, and King Library.

Seniors organize 'Euphoric' art show

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Senior Thesis Art Show, “Euphoric,” opened in Memorial Hall’s Main Gallery Monday, Nov. 9. The show features work from Jennifer Boyer, Hannah Conner, Shania Macomber, and Christopher Wright. CSC Live helps Theatre expand its audience

CHADRON – Similar to many Chadron State College events since March, the first fall Theatre production featured adaptations. According to Professor Scott Cavin, the Oct. 1 CSC Live stream of “I Love You. You’re Perfect. Now Change.” reached approximately 300 high school students at multiple locations around western Nebraska. The following night, an additional 317 viewers at 115 unique sites streamed the play.

CHADRON – Four Chadron State College students presented during the virtual High Plains Regional English honorary Sigma Tau Delta conference Oct. 23. They are Ashtyn Blacksheep of Fort Collins, Colo., Johnny Gill of Auburn, Neb., Julissa Gomez of Alliance, Neb., and Abigail Swanson of Grand Island, Neb. Theatre to debut 'What's Next?'

CHADRON – How does a theatre department present a play that is socially distanced during a pandemic? This question, combined with time travel and how it could result in alternate outcomes, led Chadron State College Professor Scott Cavin into a collaboration with Artist-in-Residence Jenn Poarch and playwright David Craven, a former CSC Artist-in-Residence, who lives in Georgia, to develop a concept.

Panhandle Advantage provides a streamlined transfer process, scholarships

CHADRON – The Panhandle Advantage is a collaborative effort between Western Nebraska Community College and Chadron State College created to streamline the process for WNCC students who have earned an associate’s degree to complete a bachelor’s degree at CSC. Each WNCC graduate with a qualifying GPA is eligible for a two-year scholarship to CSC.

Social Work students make final preparations for LGBTQ+ video distribution

CHADRON – Chadron State College Social Work seniors Taylee Neefe of Hemingford, Neb., Katelyn Wheeler of Imperial, Neb., and Celeste Cardona of Mitchell, Neb., are among the 11 students making final preparations to distribute LGBTQ+ informational videos on flash drives next week as part of their class (SW 435). The original videos are customized for different audiences, including students in elementary, middle, and high schools, their parents, and educators.

CHADRON – Chadron Mayor Miles Bannan proclaimed Nov. 8 First Generation Student Day during a City Council meeting Monday night. The declaration celebrates the 55th anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act and acknowledges the talents and potential first generation students have to offer their communities. Turner earns BHECN's Champion Award

She has worked in mental health services for 11 years and is pursuing licensure in clinical mental health counseling. CHADRON – Chadron State College’s second food pantry of the academic year will be Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Student Center information desk. Social Work seniors plan to produce video about LGBTQ+

CHADRON – Instead of hosting its annual conference, the Chadron State College Social Work senior class intends to produce a series of educational videos about the LGBTQ+ community and share it on USB drives in November. The purpose for the project is to decrease discrimination against members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Applications available for CSCEA scholarship

CHADRON – Applications are now being accepted for the 2021 Chadron State College Education Association (CSCEA) scholarship. The scholarship, funded by CSCEA faculty members, provides two $500 scholarships for the Spring 2021 semester. Students who have completed a minimum of 30 hours at the time of application are eligible to apply.

Anderson receives Mari Sandoz Research Award

LINCOLN, Neb. – Chadron State College graduate Broc Anderson is the 2020-21 Sandoz Scholar and recipient of a $1,000 research award, the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society announced. Anderson, a graduate student at the University of Nebraska Kearney and the Community Education Coordinator at the Trails and Rails Museum in Kearney, will present his research at the 2021 Sandoz Symposium.

Tibbits' Belize granite geochemistry research published

CHADRON – Dr. Tawny Tibbits, who joined the Chadron State College Geoscience faculty in 2019, has written a chapter in a peer-reviewed volume about Central American archaeology, “An Archaeological Reconstruction of Ancient Maya Life at Pacbitun, Belize,” by Terry G. Powis, Sheldon Skaggs, and George J. Micheletti. Tibbits’ research from 2014 in the chapter builds on her dissertation work.

CHADRON – Two public gatherings highlighted the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees meeting at Chadron State College Thursday, Sept. 10. The college and Board of Trustees officially dedicated the track and field complex Thursday and then followed that by breaking ground at the Math Science renovation and project Friday morning.

State Colleges see increase in fall enrollment

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska State College System (NSCS) had an overall gain in full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment of 1.37%. This increase can be attributed to the second-largest freshman class on record at Wayne State College, a dramatic increase in the number of graduate students at Peru State College, and a higher retention rate at Chadron State College.

Former CSC student, Zhang, enjoying internship with United Nations

CHADRON – Chadron State College graduate Kevin Zhang of Alliance, Nebraska, is completing an internship with the United Nations this summer. Zhang, who is in his third year of law school at the University of Nebraska, was part of CSC’s inaugural Rural Law Opportunities Program (RLOP) cohort, and will conclude his full-time, remote internship by the end of September.

CHADRON – Twenty high school students from Chadron, Crawford, and Alliance got a taste of college during the Upward Bound Summer Program hosted at Chadron State College in July. First-year director of the program, Heather Barry, said the high school students made new friends, looked out for each other, and showed kindness and compassion, while learning what college life can be like.

Sandoz Center hosts WWII exhibit

CHADRON – “Soldiering Into Victory,” a display in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, commemorating the 75 anniversary of the end of WWII is now open. The Sandoz Center is an official stop on the 2020 Nebraska Tourism Passport program. Visitors can participate with a smart device app or paper booklets available at the front desk. The Sandoz Center is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon.

CSC Spring commencement ceremonies canceled

CHADRON – Chadron State College President Randy Rhine announced Thursday the 2020 Spring Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement Ceremonies have been canceled. The ceremonies were originally scheduled for May 9 but the college postponed the events in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While there won’t be a ceremony this summer, all Spring 2020 graduates are invited to join their fellow graduates at the 2020 Winter ceremonies, scheduled for Dec. 18.

CHADRON – Chadron State College alumna Lindsey Boardman of Medicine Bow, Wyoming, earned the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award from the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) in March. Math Science building now named Math Science Center of Innovative Learning

CHADRON – The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees approved the name for Chadron State College’s Math Science during its regular meeting last week. The Math Science building, which opened in 1970, will now be known as the Math Science Center of Innovative Learning (COIL). Renovation of the original building and the additional north wing received widespread support throughout the region last year when more than 40 organizations endorsed the project.

State Colleges lower online rates for Graduate courses in Education

LINCOLN – Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges are lowering their online rate to $359 per credit hour for graduate-level courses for PK-12 educators. Graduate-level courses that lead to Master’s degrees in curriculum and instruction, special education, and history/math/science education are included in the new rate for the 2020-21 academic year, which makes these degrees among the most affordable in the state for teachers.

CSC provides CARES funds to 458 students, totaling more than $540,000

CHADRON – Chadron State College has successfully distributed the funds provided by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to 458 students. Beginning in May, Chadron State began distributing the funds, and by June 1, the institution had granted $540,638 for students’ financial relief. The CARES Act funds for student relief were intended to cover increased home technology costs, food insecurity, travel expenses, health care, and childcare for students.

Some CSC facilities now open to public

CHADRON – After being closed to the public since March 17, Chadron State College will allow the public on campus in selected facilities beginning Monday, June 1. The buildings open to the public are the Nelson Physical Activity Center, the King Library, the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, and Crites Hall. The buildings are open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., unless they have other posted hours.

This year, however, that was not possible due to public health recommendations. Pathogenic Microbiology students study COVID-19

CHADRON – Chadron State College students enrolled in Pathogenic Microbiology this semester explored the epidemiology of the coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic. Students generated questions based on reading assignments from their professor, Dr. Ann Buchmann. She then organized the questions and formed three discussion groups to answer them. The students each compiled their findings in a formal paper and short synopsis for the public.

Rising Sophomore award recipients announced

CHADRON – Like many spring events in 2020, the Rising Sophomore Awards were canceled due to COVID-19, however, despite social distancing, the program still recognized students who will be CSC sophomores in the fall. Certificates were mailed to award winners with a letter from Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. James Powell, who helped establish the ceremony five years ago.

Board of Trustees host first videoconference meeting

The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees had its April 23 business meeting through videoconference – a first for the state colleges and its governing board. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Nebraska’s efforts to limit the number of individuals in close proximity, Gov. Pete Ricketts issued Executive Order 20-03 which allows public bodies to conduct their open meetings through remote electronic means.

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Education program hosted a successful virtual accreditation from a Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) peer review team April 19-21. The visit was originally intended to be a face-to-face visit on campus, but was changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Omaha Symphony to perform on campus Friday

CHADRON – The Omaha Symphony will perform at Chadron State College’s Memorial Hall Friday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the Galaxy Series event are free for CSC students and employees. CHADRON – Dr. Jodi Angel-Trejo, a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner from Kearney, Nebraska, told nearly 100 attendees at Chadron State College’s 31st annual Excellence in Early Childhood Conference Saturday in the Student Center that they are the most important teacher in a traumatized child’s life.

Tewahade show opens at Memorial Hall

CHADRON – “Bits and Pieces: Beauty in Chaos,” a show featuring fiber art and quilts by CSC alumna Whitney Tewahade and digital photography by her daughter, Leila Tewahade, is now open in Chadron State College’s Memorial Hall Main Gallery through March 20. A reception is scheduled for Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Sandoz Center requesting WWII items

The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center is seeking public contributions for its upcoming show “Soldiering into Victory: 75th Anniversary of World War II Ending.” The exhibit will be on display from April 8 to May 30. The Sandoz Center is requesting copies of photographs of local men and women in uniform who served in WWII and copies of letters they sent home.

CHADRON – Although college students in parts of the world as far apart as western Nebraska and Mozambique, a nation of almost 30 million people on the southeast coast of Africa, are different in many ways, they seem to share at least one characteristic, according to a research project undertaken by Chadron State College student Dinema Mate (Dee-nay-mah Mat-tay) last summer.

Spring theatre schedule includes new Artist in Residence

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Theatre department is presenting two shows in the spring semester that both deal with the supernatural. “She Kills Monsters” by Qui Nguyen opens Feb. 20 and runs through Feb. 23. “The Great Beyond” and “The Ghost of Splinter Cove,” a combined show, will be April 23-26. Tickets are free and the productions will be in the Black Box Theatre. All performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. except the Sunday 2 p.m. matinees.

Pop-up food pantry opens

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s first pop-up food pantry will be Sunday and Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the King Library entryway. The food pantry, targeted to help food insecure students, is provided by Shepherd’s Pantry at Immanuel Lutheran Church and CSC’s Student Senate.

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Rangeland Management program is hosting Practitioner in Residence Dr. Rick Baydack this semester to teach Applied Agroecosystem Management (AGRI 460/560). Baydack is professor and chair of Environmental Science and Studies at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. The Bill and Virginia Coffee Family Foundation Grant funds the Practitioner in Residence.

Klueber appointed as student trustee

LINCOLN – Governor Pete Ricketts has appointed Konery Klueber of Rapid City, South Dakota, Tyler Harms of Falls City, Nebraska, and Amanda Jaixen of Platte Center, Nebraska, to serve as student trustees on the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees. They will each serve a one-year term in the 2020-21 academic year. Harms was appointed from Peru State College, and Jaixen was appointed to represent the students of Wayne State College.

CHADRON – Marji Patz, Ecological Site Specialist with the Soil Survey Office in Powell, Wyoming, received the Chadron State College Range Alumni Achievement Award Jan. 16 during Range Day at the Student Center. Patz has been with the Soil and Plant Sciences Division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) since 2010.

Crouse named interim dean

CHADRON – A familiar face has assumed the interim role of Dean of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences at Chadron State College. Dr. Margaret Crouse, who served as a dean at CSC from 1993 to 2002 and 2004 to 2015, will fill the role vacated by Dr. Jim Powell, who was recently named the college’s Vice President for Academic Affairs. Crouse’s first day at CSC was Monday.

Chadron State and Wayne State partner to propose a new Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics

LINCOLN – The Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges has approved a proposal for a new baccalaureate program in Nutrition and Dietetics, which was jointly submitted by Chadron State College and Wayne State College. This collaborative degree program will be available via a hybrid delivery, with both Colleges offering the required courses via both face-to-face and online.

Eli Young Band to perform in Chadron Jan. 29

CHADRON – The Eli Young Band will perform at Chadron State College Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Nelson Physical Activity Center. The event, originally scheduled for Oct. 10, was postponed due to weather. Those who purchased tickets for the October concert will be able to use their tickets for admission.
