CSC closes Wednesday and Thursday

CHADRON -- Chadron State College is closing its campus Wednesday, Dec. 21 and Thursday, Dec. 22 because of winter weather conditions. Since the Fall semester has concluded, the residence halls and dining services are closed. Chadron State College will begin its Winter Break Friday, Dec. 23, and remain closed until Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023.

Alumni Director welcomes opportunity to return home

CHADRON – Katie Digmann is excited about returning to her alma mater as the Director of Alumni and Development. Among her responsibilities, Digmann, who will replace Karen Pope once she retires in January 2023, will lead the Alumni Association, host alumni gatherings and alumni travel, coordinate alumni events on campus, and raise funds to support scholarships and campus initiatives.

2022 Winter Commencement Canceled

Due to the unprecedented winter storm Chadron is experiencing and in the interest of safety for all participants, the 2022 Winter Commencement Ceremony for Graduate and Undergraduate students at Chadron State College is canceled, President Randy Rhine announced early Friday morning. The ceremony was to take place today at 2 p.m. at the Chicoine Center. All students who were graduating today are encouraged to attend the Spring Commencement Ceremony in May.

Art Day attracts nearly 100 high school students

CHADRON – After a two-year hiatus, the CSC High School Art Day took place Nov. 8 despite the city of Chadron losing power the day before during a damaging windstorm. Regional high school art teachers and nearly 100 students were excited and enthusiastic to attend the event, according to Art Professor Mary Donahue.

2022 One Book One Nebraska author, Agee, to present at CSC

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Distinguished Writer Series will feature Jonis Agee, recipient of the 2022 One Book One Nebraska, in two presentations Nov. 3. Agee will read from her novel, The Bones of Paradise, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center. The free, public book discussion will cover the issues the novel raises about living in western Nebraska, according to organizers of the event Dr. Matt Evertson and Markus Jones.

Theatre Day draws nearly 200 high school students

CHADRON – Nearly 200 students from eight high schools in Nebraska and South Dakota attended Chadron State College’s annual Theatre Day Oct. 6. More than 20 CSC students taught sessions on 16 topics ranging from costuming, lighting, set painting, improvisation, and publicity photography. Theatre faculty and staff also taught workshops.

Tree planting is a tradition for Project Strive

CHADRON – Nearly 100 Project Strive TRiO students have participated in an annual tradition of planting trees on the Chadron State College campus during the past 11 years. Jen Schaer, director of Project Strive TRiO, said the tradition was established when students in the program helped plant trees on C-Hill during The Big Event. They have also helped with other campus beautification projects.

CHADRON – The Chadron State Foundation’s annual Fall Fund Drive will begin Oct. 4 and conclude Oct. 21. Last year, more than 100 volunteers from the campus and community raised $202,594 in 2021 to help fund student scholarships and programs at Chadron State College.

Exhibit in King Library designed to increase awareness about Sexual Assault

CHADRON – A survivor art exhibit, What Were You Wearing, is in the King Library Sept. 16 through Oct. 31. The display, including articles of clothing described by survivors of sexual assault, aims to explore the cultural attitude implying clothing provokes sexual assault, according to Interim Title IX Coordinator Morgan Cullan. The exhibit will be open during regular library hours in the northeast corner of the second floor.

CSC acquires portable X-Ray Fluorescence unit

CHADRON – Chadron State College students in Geoscience courses are able to conduct analysis of solid materials with the college’s first portable X-Ray Fluorescence unit (pXRF) purchased with a grant written by Professor Dr. Mike Leite and Assistant Professor Dr. Tawny Tibbits from the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research: a National Science Foundation program (EPSCoR).

State Colleges’ Enrollment Growth Continues

LINCOLN – For the fourth straight year, the Nebraska State College System (NSCS) experiences overall growth in enrollment with an increase in student headcount. As of September 2, the NSCS had an overall increase in headcount of 0.2%. The State Colleges have increased enrollment by 6.3% since Fall 2018. The most recent increase is primarily attributed to a 19.7% increase in new transfer students at Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges.

CHADRON – Twelve new faculty members will join Chadron State College this fall. They are Dr. Janet Anthony, Dr. Jami Clifford, Dr. Nathan Favaloro, Jeremiah Downes, Jeremy Quick, Dr. Haesong Kwon, Danielle Covolo, Dr. Gabriella M. Pruitt Santos and Matthew Bower. High Plains Herbarium’s digital footprint reaches 52,000 entries

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s High Plains Herbarium digital collection is the largest of any Nebraska herbarium, according to Herbarium Director Steve Rolfsmeier. Data for more than 52,000 specimens are searchable online and more than half of the entries have images associated with them, according to Rolfsmeier. This is about 80 percent of the college’s flowering plants, ferns and conifer specimens.

The workshop is funded primarily through the Pilster Endowment Fund of the Mari Sandoz Society. Sandoz Center exhibit features pioneer photographer

CHADRON – Pioneer photographer Fred W. Farrar chronicled the Black Hills from the turn of the 20th century through the 1930s. An exhibit that opened in July at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center consists of 30 of 39 pieces displayed in the 1980s in a collection organized by Dr. Allen Shepherd, a former CSC History Professor, and the late Mary Farrar, daughter of Farrar.

No Tuition Increase at State Colleges

LINCOLN – For the second straight year, the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges froze tuition at the Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges for the 2022-23 Academic Year. The Board also reduced the non-resident undergraduate tuition rate to match the resident rate to encourage out-of-state students to attend a State College in the hope of further addressing Nebraska’s workforce shortage.

Food Pantry serves more students

CHADRON – More students utilized the Chadron State College Food Pantry during the 2021-22 academic year, according to Project Coordinator Kate Pope. A total of 847 bags, each containing about $20 of groceries, was distributed 11 times, serving 1,347 students. This was an increase from 518 bags serving 739 students the previous year.

Upward Bound grant renewed for five years, summer program begins

CHADRON – The Upward Bound TRiO grant at Chadron State College has been renewed for five years for nearly $1.5 million, an increase from the last five-year grant cycle, according to Upward Bound Director Heather Barry. Barry, who is starting her third year, said the program will be required to serve 63 students compared to 60 high school students in Chadron, Crawford, and Alliance.

Craig Conway, a Publications Specialist in College Relations who managed the Chadron State College Print Shop, died Sunday. He was 46. A memorial service for Conway is scheduled for Friday, June 17 at 10 a.m. at Memorial Hall. A graveside service will be later that day at 2:30 p.m. at the Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport, Nebraska. A reception will follow at Court House and Jail Rock Golf Course in Bridgeport.

C-Hill plays role in Mental Health Awareness Month

CHADRON – During May, Chadron residents likely noticed C-Hill looked a little different during the evening. That’s because for the past four years in May, the C on C-Hill has been illuminated for Mental Health Awareness Month. The Big Event celebrates 10th annual day of service

CHADRON – More than 400 volunteers worked at more than 45 job sites in the Chadron area Saturday during the 10th annual The Big Event. The day of service capped off a special week for The Big Event since Chadron’s City Council approved an official proclamation naming April as The Big Event month. The event normally involves painting, cleaning, yard work, hauling trash, as well as food collection and outreach to care facility residents.

CHADRON – Former Chadron State College student Miranda Bright, a current teacher at Crete High School, received the National Association Teacher of Family and Consumer Sciences New Professional Award Dec. 3 at a gala in New Orleans. The national award is given to one FCS teacher annually who has made significant contributions in the classroom, curriculum development, and provided multiple opportunities for students.

CSC students, employees have a Friday afternoon to remember

CHADRON – Chadron State College students and employees were directed to evacuate campus Friday afternoon after receiving an anonymous call that a bomb was on college property. High Plains Band and Choir Festival celebrates 50 years

CHADRON – Chadron State College will celebrate its 50th High Plains Band and Choir Festival Monday and Tuesday in Memorial Hall. The event will include 151 students from 26 high schools in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, according to the event organizer and Accompanist Bobby Pace. CSC faculty and students assist with two days of clinics followed by a culminating performance.

CHADRON – For the first time in six years, Chadron State College’s spring enrollment has increased from the previous spring. As of Monday, CSC’s enrollment in the 2022 spring semester is 2,101 students, compared to 2,067 students in 2021.

CHADRON – A music composition by Chadron State College student Thomas Hughes aired Jan. 6 during Nebraska Public Media’s television series What If, a show about innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity in Nebraska. The theme music, Swashbuckling Revelation, is Hughes’ first concert band score.

LINCOLN – The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees hosted its business meeting Wednesday in Lincoln. Prior to the meeting, the NSCS hosted a reception for Nebraska State Senators, and the Councils of Business Officers, Academic Officers, and Student Affairs Officers met.

Music Department plans spring performances

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Music Department’s spring schedule includes 19 events. In addition to recitals by CSC faculty and students, three guest artists will take the stage. Concerts will continue the Celebration of Women in Music series that began in Fall 2021 and include final installments in the series to honor Beethoven’s 250th year.All performances are free and open to the public. The Jan. 31 and Feb. 21 concerts will be broadcast by CSC Live.

Reichman named Project Strive/TRiO December Student of the Month

CHADRON - Chadron State College student Cooper Reichman is the Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for December. Reichman, a junior from Chappell, Nebraska, said he chose Chadron State College because of its Rangeland program, which is the second largest academic program of its kind in the nation. He also works for the U.S. Forest Service office in Chadron. Reichman said he enjoys being part of a small school and small community because he gets to know a lot of people.
