Patterson taking the helm among 2023's highlights

CHADRON – The twelfth president of Chadron State College, Dr. Ron K. Patterson, took office July 1. Patterson conducted a listening tour, Building Our Future Together, with more than 20 stops in three states within CSC’s service region. He said he wanted to learn more about what the college is doing well, as well as learn about areas for improvement.

William Artis revealed

CHADRON – Dr. Shirley Jones, a niece of Harlem Renaissance sculptor William Ellsworth Artis, has recorded her findings about his life in a self-published book. Artis taught sculpture at Chadron State College, known then as Nebraska State Teachers College, from 1954 to 1964.

Mays advises graduates to use song, imagination 

CHADRON – Jovan Mays, a 2010 Chadron State College graduate, shared several poetic moments from his childhood in his Winter Commencement address. Mays is an educator, coach, and public speaker in Colorado. He was a member of the CSC wrestling and football teams for five years.

English students learn from Braiding Sweetgrass

CHADRON – Students in Dr. Matthew Evertson’s Fall capstone course Outside: Your Self in the World (CAP 469E) read Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. He said the English and Humanities motto Get Outside Yourself served as the inspiration for the name of the course. The capstone is an Essential Studies requirement.

Esports team wins Rocket League Open Plus Championship

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Rocket League Black won the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) championship game against Ohio Northern University Thursday. The team finished the season undefeated in the EAST 12B Conference Champion III division playing against Sam Houston State University, Florida International University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology, Drexel University, Grand Valley State University, and Northern Michigan University.

Fall Fund Drive volunteers raise more than $100,000

CHADRON – Fourteen teams of volunteers with the Chadron State Foundation’s Fall Fund Drive raised a total of $106,227 from donors and supporters of CSC. Sixty-seven volunteers canvassed the Chadron State College campus and surrounding communities in October and gathered at the Bean Broker Nov. 16 to celebrate.

CHADRON – Tuesday, in the final lecture of the fall semester in the Graves Lecture Series at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, Justice Studies Instructor Danielle Covolo presented: Sacred Knowledge, a panel discussion about the culture of the Oglala and Lakota people and the Pine Ridge Reservation. The panel included Duane Two Bulls and a singing performance by Virgil RedCloud Goode.

Science student and faculty member receive training on biotech equipment

CHADRON – A Chadron State College faculty member and student received training during the midterm break about how to use a new piece of scientific research equipment called a flow cytometer. The compact tabletop unit uses a laser to detect and analyze the chemical and physical characteristics of cells.

CSC set to host 60th Scholastic Contest

CHADRON – Chadron State College will host its 60th annual Scholastic Contest Wednesday. Thirty-two schools from Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Colorado, plan to bring more than 900 students to campus to take 42 tests, according to Caitlin Roes chair of the Scholastic Contest Committee. Students who earn high marks in their respective tests will earn CSC scholarships.

CHADRON – The Hastings family is a recipient of the Family Tree Award. The award is presented annually to families with a tradition of attending CSC. The recipient family must include a minimum of three generations of graduates. At least two of the family members must have a record of outstanding service to the college, the alumni association, their community, or their profession.

National Parks landscape architect speaks at opening Graves Lecture

CHADRON – Kat Shiffler, a landscape architect with the National Parks Service gave the first of three lectures in the Graves Lecture Series at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Tuesday. Her lecture, Trail Town, U.S.A., focused on the building of new, long-distance trails connecting small towns throughout the Midwest, including Nebraska.

Brust returns to Wyoming to confirm discovery

CHADRON – Dr. Mathew Brust, Chadron State College Professor of Life Sciences, returned to south-central Wyoming this summer in hopes of capturing additional specimens to confirm what he suspected was his discovery of a new species of bumblebee scarab beetle in July 2022.

Artis sculpture donated to CSC

CHADRON – Chadron State College recently received a sculpture created by the late William Artis, who taught art at CSC from 1954 to 1964, thanks to Cathy Clary, of Pasco, Washington, who was honoring her late husband’s wishes. Clary delivered the clay bust to CSC officials in late August.

CHADRON – Dr. Britt Helmbrecht, Associate Professor in Health Physical Education and Recreation, has initiated a bike-sharing program on the Chadron State College campus through a $10,000 grant she received from Healthy Blue, an arm of the Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance company.

CHADRON – Chadron State College student Ethan Tussing of New Underwood, South Dakota, has completed two summer internships at the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota. A Social Science Education major, he said the summer job sounded like an interesting change of pace from his past work and more closely related to his future career.

New planetarium reports stellar first year

CHADRON – During its first year of operation, the Dr. Lois Veath Planetarium in the Math Science Center of Innovative Learning (COIL) served 2,404 people, according to Kinsley Mason, an Instructor in Physical Sciences who will be managing the planetarium this academic year. The attendance was more than double the final year the planetarium operated in Math Science before its renovation and expansion.

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Cheer Team is looking to provide some more cheer around campus and the community by offering to appear at local events to help promote CSC. This service is open to all departments on campus and the community of Chadron.

CHADRON – Aladdin Food Services is offering Chadron State College clubs a way to fundraise by staffing concession stands on campus. Recognized student organization presidents have access to sign-up members of their respective organizations for fundraising opportunities, according to Karl Kigerl, Food Service Director.

CHADRON – Seven new faculty members have joined Chadron State College for the fall semester. Three of the new faculty earned their undergraduate degrees from CSC. In the School of Liberal Arts they are Dr. Adam Hoesing and Dr. Tiffany Wasserburger. In the School of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences they are Adrianna Calle, Jessica Heesacker, and Dr. Miranda Scoggan. And, in the School of Business, Mathematics, and Science they are Dr. Clint Evrard and Kinsley Mason.

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Food Pantry project coordinator Kate Pope has announced the CSC Food Pantry will be open additional hours during the 2023-24 Academic Year in response to feedback from students. Update on National Student Clearinghouse

National Student Clearinghouse (the Clearinghouse), the nation's largest provider of postsecondary transcript services, has recently identified a security breach. This breach, affecting several higher education institutions across the country, potentially includes the Nebraska State Colleges (Chadron State, Peru State and Wayne State Colleges), which utilizes the Clearinghouse for federally mandated enrollment certifications and transcript services.

Two Chadron State College students win at FBLA nationals

CHADRON – Two students from Chadron State College, Mekenna Fisher of Hershey, Nebraska, and Markus Ramsey of Minden, Nebraska, won championships at the 2023 Collegiate National Leadership Conference of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) in Atlanta June 22-25. Five other CSC students placed in the top 10 at the national event that attracted more than 800 college students and educators from the U.S. for workshops and networking opportunities.

CHADRON – Fifteen high school students learned more about mental health careers by participating in the Frontier Area Rural Mental-health (FARM) Camp at Chadron State College in June. Student wins award for water research presentation

CHADRON – In April, Chadron State College student Corey Griffin of Omaha won the Best Undergraduate Presentation in Geoscience at the Nebraska Academy of Sciences (NAS) conference for his Analysis of Know Your Well Data on NUREP Data to Understand Changes in Groundwater Contamination. Griffin is a double major in environmental geoscience and studio art. NUREP was the 1980 Nebraska-South Dakota Uranium Resource Evaluation Project conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy.

CHADRON – Nine Chadron State College students, Associate Professor Dr. Mary Keithly, and adjunct faculty member Kinsley Mason traveled to Universal Studios Florida during midterm break to enhance their scientific understanding. CHADRON — Chadron State College students Allison Acosta of Tucson, Arizona, and Cole Martinez of David City, Nebraska, each won two awards from the Black Hills chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) Feb. 17 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Martinez won two silver awards for an identity system for exhibits and signage in the CSC Museum of Geology and his typography design for a self-identity logo. Acosta won a silver and a Judges’ Choice award for her Song of Achilles book cover design.

Tibbits plans international granite research; national presentation

CHADRON – This spring, Chadron State College Associate Professor Dr. Tawny Tibbits will travel to Belize to conduct research on granite using a portable Xray fluorescence (pXRF) unit. Several weeks later, she and her colleagues who recently co-authored an academic journal article, will present their research at a national conference.

Brust discovers possible new species of bumblebee scarab beetle

CHADRON – In July 2022, Chadron State College Professor Dr. Matt Brust was about 30 miles northeast of Rawlins, Wyoming, along the South flank of the Ferris mountains, at an elevation of about 7,000 feet, looking for tiger beetles. He didn’t find any of the species he was seeking, but did make an exciting discovery.

More than 100 students compete in Best of the West Invitational

CHADRON – Chadron State College and the Nebraska Council on Economic Education (NCEE) co-sponsored the sixth annual Best of the West Business Invitational Jan. 25. The event was the largest to date with 106 high school students from Alliance, Chadron, Hay Springs, Hemingford, Morrill, Omaha, Sidney, and Valentine participating.

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Galaxy Series will host the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus at Memorial Hall Auditorium Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Celebrating two decades of keeping American traditional circus alive, the family show brings a diverse roster of sideshow, vaudeville, and variety talent.

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Theatre department opens its 2023 spring season with Working, a musical adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso from Studs Terkel's best-selling book of interviews with American workers.

Spring enrollment up at CSC

CHADRON – Similar to last year, Chadron State College’s spring enrollment has increased from the previous spring. As of Monday, CSC’s 10-day enrollment in the 2023 spring semester is 2,197 students, compared to 2,102 students in 2022.

Sandoz’s travels featured in semester-long exhibit

CHADRON – Travels with Mari is an exhibit in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center from Jan. 9 through May 12. It features photographs from Sandoz’s trips across the U.S. from the 1940s to 1960s. In addition to photos, exhibit artifacts include suitcases, a hat box, purses, perfume bottles, and clothing. One display case is filled with accessories such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and scarves, according to Courtney Kouba, assistant archivist.

The Nebraska Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS), the Nebraska Soil & Water Conservation Foundation (NSWCF), and the Nebraska Chapter SWCS-UNL Foundation have announced scholarship recipients for the spring 2023 semester.

NSCS Board of Trustees approves CSC maintenance and repair expenditures

CHADRON – During its Jan. 12 meeting, the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees approved $2 million for Chadron State College water and sewer system upgrades and $100,000 for emergency repair and eventual replacement of the Burkhiser Complex’s roof.

Sasse named Interim Dean for Professional Studies and Applied Sciences

CHADRON – Dr. Grant Sasse has been named the Interim Dean for Professional Studies and Applied Sciences (PSAS) Vice President for Academic Affairs Jim Powell announced in early January. The former dean, Dr. Alaric Williams, is taking a position in North Dakota. The School of PSAS includes Education, Psychological Sciences, Social Work, Health Physical Education and Recreation, Family and Consumer Sciences, Agriculture and Range Management, and Military Science and Leadership.

Jessen named December Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month

CHADRON – Chadron State College student Velvet Jessen is the December Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month. Jessen, a junior from Herald, South Dakota, said she chose Chadron State College because she liked the aesthetics of the campus when she toured it. Additionally, she was familiar with the reputation of CSC’s health sciences department and said her tour gave her confidence about what she could achieve.

Math Science COIL leads CSC achievements for 2022

CHADRON – The crowning achievement for Chadron State College in 2022 was undoubtedly the completion of the $32 million Math Science Center of Innovative Learning renovation and expansion. More than 180 businesses, families, and organizations supported the project with $3.65 million in donations. Renovation of the building had long been a top priority for the NSCS Board of Trustees.
