Theatre department presents popular productions

CHADRON – For its fall 2023 production, the Chadron State Theatre department presented What the Constitution Means to Me, directed by three students, Olivia Freeze, Halle Smith, and Josie Fritz. Each director selected a separate cast of three actors to perform the play, giving audiences a variety of interpretations of the same script.

President’s and Dean’s Lists announced

CHADRON – Chadron State College has announced the students on the Fall 2023 President’s and Dean’s Lists. The President's List consists of students with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Students met the requirements for the Dean’s List by earning at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

CSC announces agreement with Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine

CHADRON – Chadron State College has announced a Memorandum of Understanding with Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM). Dean of CSC’s School of Business, Mathematics, and Science Dr. Ryan Morgan has been working with ICOM’s Assistant Director of Admissions Ellie Mathews to establish additional alternative routes for CSC pre-medicine undergraduates.

Three students direct separate casts in fall production 

CHADRON -- Theatre Professor Scott Cavin decided to take a unique approach to the fall production by choosing three senior students as directors of three separate casts in “What the Constitution Means To Me.” This gave nine students an opportunity to perform and audiences nine performances to choose from in late November and early December.

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s International Club continued its Dine with Us lunch series Jan. 23 in the Student Center with a presentation by student Vernon Plenty Bull and TRiO Director Jennifer Schaer. They shared a map and photos of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and discussed its history, government agencies, education system, health services, law enforcement, traditions, and customs.

Benson writes for rodeo publications

CHADRON – Chadron State College student BreAnne Benson of West Fargo, North Dakota, has written freelance articles for several regional rodeo publications. She will graduate in May with a Communication Arts degree with an emphasis in journalism and media production. She transferred to CSC from Valley City State University in North Dakota when she decided to change majors from music to journalism.

CSC students hired as Nebraska SMART tutors

CHADRON – The Nebraska State College System (NSCS) has launched a rural tutoring program with teacher education candidates from Chadron, Peru, and Wayne Colleges, tutoring K-12 students in Educational Service Units 1, 4, and 13. Nebraska Success Made Accessible through Rural Tutoring (SMART) is a free, online tutoring program funded by a Nebraska Department of Education grant awarded to the NSCS.

Range Management team takes second at international competition; Fisher places first

CHADRON – Chadron State College students Michael Andersen of Chadron, Trevor Eisenbraun of Norfolk, Neb., Mekenna Fisher of Hershey, Neb., and Kourtney Kronhofman of Chadron competed at the Society for Range Management’s (SRM) annual international conference in Sparks Nevada Jan. 28-Feb. 2. The CSC team placed second in the problem-solving competition called the Rangeland Cup. Fisher placed first in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Theatre Department presents the Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Theatre Department will present highlights of 37 Shakespeare plays including comedies, histories, and tragedies in 97 minutes. The director of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), CSC alum Zackary Wellnitz, said the production was written in 1984.

High Plains Band and Choir Festival celebrates 52nd year

CHADRON – Nearly 130 high school musicians gathered at CSC last week for the 52nd High Plains Band and Choir Festival. Following workshops and rehearsals on Monday and Tuesday, the band and choir presented a public concert Tuesday evening. The Honor Band Guest Conductor was Dr. Frank Tracz, Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Kansas State University.

Show honors Artis during Black History Month

CHADRON – For Black History Month, the Chadron State College Art Department will host a show in Memorial Hall’s Main Gallery featuring the work of the late William Artis who taught at CSC from 1954 to 1965. The show will be open from Feb. 8 to March 8 with a reception in Memorial Hall’s Lobby on Feb. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. A book, Uncovering Uncle William, written about Artis by his niece, Dr. Shirley Jones, will be available for sale.

CHADRON – Chadron State College is introducing CSC Grows, a new collaborative agricultural project between the President’s Cabinet, CSC Food Pantry, and CSC Wellness. CSC Grows is an indoor garden project where fresh produce will be grown on campus to be distributed to students at the CSC Food Pantry.

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Rural Law Opportunities Program (RLOP) students attended the Nebraska State Bar Association Leadership Academy (NSBA) in Lincoln, Nebraska, Feb. 1-2. The sessions were planned to help the RLOP students understand more about legislation, and the Nebraska legislative process and counsel, according to Kate Pope RLOP Project Coordinator.

Nebraska Department of Education Launches Innovative Teacher Apprenticeship Program

LINCOLN – In a significant stride toward addressing the teacher shortage crisis in the state, the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) has announced the Nebraska Teacher Apprenticeship Program. The initiative seeks to bolster recruitment and training of educators across Nebraska through an apprenticeship model, following the enactment of LB705 in 2023.

Science program receives Scanning Electron Microscope

CHADRON – Chadron State College students and faculty will benefit from a  $110,000 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The equipment was purchased with the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (CSLFRF) authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act, with funding passed through the State of Nebraska to the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges.

Newly discovered beetle species named for CSC professor

CHADRON –The unusual-looking insects first collected by Chadron State College Biology Professor Dr. Mathew Brust in sand dunes in south-central Wyoming have now been confirmed as a new species of scarab beetle and named after him.

CHADRON – CSC alumna Andrea Westlake of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, received the Early Career National Award during the Society for Range Management’s (SRM) 77th Annual Meeting in Sparks, Nevada, in February. CHADRON – Two Chadron State College students and Assistant Professor Dr. Mary Keithly attended the National American Chemical Society Spring Conference in New Orleans recently. Senior Emmanuella Tchona of the Republic of Benin made a poster presentation about her research on how Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) resists antibiotics. Jessy Sexton of Otis, Colorado, also a senior, attended the conference representing the Chemistry Club.

CHADRON – The Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education has approved a proposal for a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree to be offered by all three Nebraska State College System campuses. CSC will begin offering MAT courses starting this summer.

CSC hosts annual Rising Sophomore ceremony

CHADRON – Chadron State College students and employees gathered for the ninth annual Rising Sophomore awards ceremony Wednesday. Dr. Jim Powell, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Chadron State College, was the keynote speaker. He came to CSC in 2015 as the Dean for Assessment, Accreditation, Curriculum, and Education, Human Performance, Counseling, Psychology, and Social Work. Powell, who became the Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2020, is retiring at the end of June.

The Big Event still going strong in second decade

CHADRON – More than 450 volunteers signed in and served at 60 jobsites Saturday during Chadron State College’s twelfth annual The Big Event (TBE). The range of volunteers this year expanded beyond CSC students and employees. TBE Graduate Assistant Kinsey Smith said 30 Upward Bound high students participated with their leaders picking up litter at the green space east of Walmart and cleaning up debris in Art Alley between Main Street and Chadron Avenue.

Rural Roundtable brings together students and local business and legal professionals

CHADRON – In late April, Chadron State College students in Printmaking I (ART 225) led a two-day activity with 17 seventh graders in CSC alumna Whitney Tewahade's art class at the Chadron Middle School. CHADRON – Two Wyoming high school students advised by Chadron State College alum Devin Shimic Wells placed second in a national contest in July with a presentation about their food pantry in the Gillette, Wyoming, area. CHADRON – Edward Welsh, a 2004 graduate of Chadron State College, was a guest speaker at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument this summer. Welsh, a park ranger at Badlands National Park in western South Dakota since 2012, presented about a recently discovered genus of a small, hornless deer that he and his colleague Mattison Shreero researched.

Chadron State College and Scottsbluff Public Schools included in Expanded Teacher Apprenticeship Program

LINCOLN – Governor Jim Pillen and the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) have announced a multi-million dollar expansion of the Nebraska Teacher Apprenticeship Program aimed at addressing the teacher shortage crisis in the state. This groundbreaking initiative was launched in April 2023, following the enactment of LB705 and the NDE utilized a $1 million investment from the legislature to bolster the recruitment and training of educators across Nebraska earlier this year.

Hall selected as Winter Commencement speaker

CHADRON – Chadron State College's Winter Commencement speaker Dec. 13 in the Chicoine Center at 2 p.m. will be Brandon Hall, Principal of Deer Creek Middle School in Jefferson County Public Schools, Colorado. Hall started his journey as an educator in 2002 teaching high school social studies. CSC unveils ceremonial mace

CHADRON – A new ceremonial mace will be introduced during Chadron State College’s Winter Commencement Friday. According to Professor Dr. Kurt Kinbacher, the mace celebrates the institution’s authority to confer degrees and symbolizes its academic independence. Since the ceremonial mace also represents the status of the college’s president, it is only present at commencements and other events organized and attended by the president.

Winter Commencement to recognize 159 candidates

CHADRON – One hundred and two candidates for bachelor’s degrees and 57 candidates for master’s degrees will be recognized during Chadron State College’s Winter Commencement ceremony Friday in the Chicoine Center at 2 p.m.

Pruitt Santos and students present at conference

CHADRON – Chadron State College Assistant Professor Dr. Gabriella Pruitt Santos and three students participated in the International Studies Association Midwest Annual Conference in St. Louis on Nov. 22-23. The students were Ruhama Molla and Wongel Molla of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Kosiso Daniella Akwanamnye of Awka, Nigeria.

CHADRON – The Nebraska State Association of Secondary School Principals (NSASSP) selected Chadron High School Principal and Chadron State College alum Jerry Mack as the 2025-26 High School Principal of the Year.

President's and Dean's Lists announced

CHADRON – Chadron State College has announced the students on the Fall 2024 President’s and Dean’s Lists. The President's List consists of students with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Students met the requirements for the Dean’s List by earning at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

Inauguration and C-Hill’s centennial highlight 2024

CHADRON – The investiture of Chadron State College’s twelfth president, Dr. Ron K. Patterson on April 5 was a major college highlight in 2024. The celebration included original music composed by Music Professor Dr. Michael Stephens that was performed by CSC students, as well as an inaugural poem written and performed by Distinguished Young Alumni Jovan Mays.
