New leadership, refurbished dorm and many honors among CSC highlights

The appointment of a new president was among the highlights at Chadron State College in 2005. Dr. Janie Park arrived on campus in August and immediately began offering encouraging words. Even before she officially began her duties, she greeted the CSC football players and wished them well for the season.

Resident of CSC's West Court dies

Tomak Whitney, a resident of Chadron State College’s West Court housing facility, was found dead at his apartment early Friday afternoon. Services are pending for Whitney, who turned 34 years of age last Wednesday.

Ed Hoffman takes job in state college system office

The vice president of administration at Chadron State College the past nine years, Ed Hoffman, will become vice chancellor for facilities, planning and information technology in the Nebraska State College System Office in Lincoln in July. The announcement was made last week by Dr. Stan Carpenter, chancellor of the state college system, and Dr. Janie Park, the president of Chadron State.

Chadron State College students presented five research papers at the annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology in Toronto in mid-November. That was nearly half of the papers given by undergraduate students at the conference, which drew more than 2,500 people from around the world.

CSC grad Ron Rawalt tells Mexican murder story at conference

The story of how the 1985 murder of Enrique Camarena Salazar, a United States Drug Enforcement Agency employee in Mexico, was solved was one of the highlights during the Regional Law Enforcement Conference at Chadron State College this week. The story was told by Ron Rawalt, who grew up three blocks from the Chadron State campus and graduated from the college in 1971. He has been a FBI agent for more than 30 years, including the last 17 as a special agent at North Platte.

The driver of a Chevrolet Lumina, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to Chadron Community Hospital after her vehicle collided with a stone lamp post and Nebraska State Historical Society marker on the campus of Chadron State College on Monday. Four couples who are associated with Chadron State College have established scholarships through the Chadron State Foundation that will assist students attending the college. Watercolor exhibit open in Memorial Hall

About 30 colorful and eye-catching watercolors by June Palmer of Hot Springs are on display in the Main Gallery of Memorial Hall at Chadron State College. She will discuss her work during a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Memorial Hall. Palmer’s work in is corporate and private collections around the world. She said she never ceases to be awed by nature’s handiwork, and attempts to create on paper pieces that are similar so others can share that joy at all times.

Sandoz Center receives award

The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College was awarded the 2005 Excellence in Publication Award for small museum exhibition catalog by the Mountain-Plains Museums Association at its annual meeting in mid-September in Omaha. The award was given for the Ray and Faye Graves Photographic Exhibition Catalog, published by Chadron State College, as a companion to the exhibit that was created by and displayed at the center last fall.

Rushville teacher, CSC alum is Teacher of the Year in Nebraska

A Rushville teacher, Sherry Retzlaff, is the winner of the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award for Nebraska for 2005. Retzlaff received the honor Friday morning during an all-school convocation in the Rushville Gymnasium. The award includes a $10,000 educational grant from Wal-Mart to be used by the Gordon-Rushville Schools. She also will be one of 50 candidates for Wal-Mart’s National Teacher of the Year Award, which will be presented later this year..

A victim of Hurricane Katrina is now a freshman at Chadron State College. Tiffany Wiegel of Gulf Port, Miss., began attending classes at CSC on Wednesday, thankful that she was able to flee the destruction left by one of the worst disasters in the nation’s history.

Texan joins CSC faculty

Lee Miller has joined the faculty at Chadron State College as an assistant professor of composition and rhetoric. Miller is a native of the Dallas area, and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Abilene Christian University. He has completed work on all but the dissertation for his doctorate at Texas Women’s University in Dallas.

Fifty-five students completed work on degrees at Chadron State College this summer. While CSC does not have a commencement at the end of the summer term, the recent graduates are encouraged to participate in the graduation exercises in December.

A new humanities professor has begun working at Chadron State College. Jonathan Austad replaces Dr. Robert Doxtator, who is beginning a phased retirement after teaching at the college since 1968.

Sheldon Exhibit in Memorial Hall

The Sheldon Statewide Exhibit has opened in Memorial Hall. It is titled “Who Is Imitating Whom? Photography and Photorealism in Art.” The show focuses on the intertwined relationships between photography and photorealism in art. It will remain open through Sept. 16. The gallery hours are from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. each weekday.

Nebraska State College System Chancellor Stan Carpenter said students affected by Hurricane Katrina will be granted special admission for the fall semester at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges. The Bordeaux Community Band and the Chadron Community Chorus are gearing up for their performances in 2005 and ’06. The organizational meeting and first rehearsal for the band will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 in the band room of Memorial Hall at Chadron State College. A new assistant criminal justice professor at Chadron State College will have many first-hand experiences to tell his students. Loren Zimmerman was a high school dropout, is a Marine Corps veteran and a former homicide investigator for the Los Angeles Police Department. CSC completes renovation projects, more to begin soon

Renovation of Edna Work Residence Hall is nearing the finish line as the 2005-06 school year opens at Chadron State College. While the $4.3 million project won’t be completed by Monday when classes begin, the rooms will be ready for occupancy. Most of the remaining work will be in the lounge area that connects Edna Work Hall with Edna Work Hall Wing, which was refurbished a year ago.

Drought may have been a blessing, West Nile fever research indicates

It’s probably a very good thing that Nebraska was in a drought earlier this decade. West Nile fever entered the state in 2002 and then pounded it in 2003. More than 300 horses in Nebraska died of the virus in 2002 while the following year the state reported 1,942 human cases and 29 deaths were attributed to the virus, which is brought on by bites from a Culex mosquito that has previously bitten an infected bird.

Interim vice president, dean selected at CSC

Chadron State College has hired two women from within the institution to fill interim administrative positions for the upcoming year. Dr. Lois Veath, Chadron State College dean of Arts and Sciences, has been chosen as interim vice president of academic affairs and Dr. Kathy Bahr, associate professor of English, will serve as interim dean until a permanent vice president is hired. This fall medical appointments will be available for Chadron State College students free of charge for the second year in a row. Ann Dockweiler, CSC school nurse, said a large number of students on campus do not have insurance or any way of paying for medical expenses and as a result do not seek the medical attention they need. Area entries qualify for National History Contest

Six entries that were winners at the Western Nebraska History Day hosted by Chadron State College on March 18 placed first or second at the recent state contest in Lincoln and are eligible to advance to the national competition at College Park, Md., in June. Chadron State College students proved that they have lots of perseverance. Thirty-two of the original 42 participants in the first “Hand on the Car” contest that began at 9 a.m. Friday persevered for 24 hours, meaning that more than half of a deck of cards was drawn to determine the winner of a 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada that was the focal point of the contest.

Three South Dakota schools and two from Nebraska were the champions Friday at the 45th annual Inter-High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College. More than 1,800 students from 53 schools were entered in the event.

Some 1,850 students from 57 high schools in Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming are entered in the 45th annual Inter-High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday, April 1. Forty-nine tests will be administered, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at various locations on campus.

CSC professor to give introductory piano recital

Chadron State College piano professor, James Margetts, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3 in the Chicoine Atrium of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. This will be the first recital he has given since joining the college last fall. The recital will be open to the public without charge, but the event will kick off a fund-raising effort to purchase the Yamaha piano that is in the atrium. The piano is on loan from a Scottsbluff business.

Speaker says Lewis and Clark ate well in Midwest

One of the main reasons the Lewis and Clark expedition of 200 years ago was successful was because the explorers ate well, particularly while traveling in the Midwest, an audience at Chadron State College was told this week. The speaker, Mary Gunderson, practices palecuisineology, a word she coined to describe bringing history alive through cooking. The director of bands at Chadron State College the past 34 years, Dr. William Winkle, has announced that he will retire at the end of the spring semester. Winkle said he’s had a rewarding career, one that he’d largely duplicate if he could start it all over again.

Chadron State taking orientation to students

Future Chadron State College students will now be able to register for courses and attend orientation sessions in early March at sites throughout western Nebraska. The Chadron State College Students In Free Enterprise team won the organization’s regional case study competition Thursday through Saturday. The event was at the campus of Metropolitan State University in Denver. Jessi Moore of Chadron and Brandon Doke of Ainsworth were crowned Chadron State’s Winter Magic Formal queen and king on Saturday night. Moore and Doke, who are dating each other, were chosen by a vote of Chadron State’s students. There were 43 candidates for the honor.

Photographs illustrating the infamous “Trail of Tears” from Georgia to Oklahoma in 1838-39 will open Friday, Jan. 28 in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College. The exhibit will remain open to the public through Feb. 25.

An array of activities are scheduled at Chadron State College during the spring semester, which officially gets underway Monday, Jan 10, when classes begin. Applications for admission for the semester are still being accepted by the Admissions Office, which reported that through Monday it had received 178 undergraduate, on-campus applications for the semester.
