Mapping project will help Chadron walkers

People in Chadron who walk for fitness will soon have a new resource to help them with their endeavor. The Chadron Lifespan Wellness Team is spearheading a project to publish brochures that contain detailed maps of Chadron’s popular walking routes. Insurance provider Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska announced in June that the Chadron program was one of its nine recipients of Blue Health and Wellness grants awarded outside Omaha and Lincoln. The award is $10,000.

Guys and Dolls' opens July 15 at Post Playhouse

The cast and crew of the Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson State Park are looking to build on this year's success as they open the third and final show of the season next week. The first performance of “Guys and Dolls” will be Tuesday, July 15. Roger Mays, the playhouse’s director, said the play is often described as the perfect musical. He said the production “will equally delight audiences of all ages, providing some of the best fun of the Post Playhouse’s 2008 season.”

SIFE team finishes in nation's top 10

The Chadron State College SIFE team tied for ninth in the nation at the Students In Free Enterprise National Exposition in Chicago. The event was May 13-15 at the McCormick Place Convention Center. CSC qualified for the national expo by winning its league at the regional competition at Denver in April. A total of 143 SIFE teams qualified for the expo at 16 regional competitions. The University of Arizona won this year’s national event, which featured more than 3,200 students.

CSC alumna receives teaching award in Wyoming

A graduate of Chadron State College and Dawes County native, Sharla Dowding, is one of 10 Wyoming teachers who received a 2008 Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award. Dowding has taught science at Newcastle High School since 1997. This is the eighth year the Arch Coal Awards have been made in Wyoming. They include a $2,500 unrestricted cash prize, a trophy and a classroom plaque. Nominations of the teachers are made by the public. The selections are made by former recipients of the award.

Arizona man hired for special education instruction

Chadron State College has hired a new assistant professor of education. Dr. Humphrey Amukamara of Phoenix, Ariz., will join the Chadron State College faculty this fall where he will train students to teach special education. CSC shows appreciation for medical professionals

Chadron State College on Thursday treated Chadron medical professionals to breakfast for their role in the CSC Clinic, the service that allows CSC students to have appointments free of charge. Ann Dockweiler, CSC school nurse, reported that she and other Chadron medical professionals responded to 431 appointments during the spring 2008 semester, bringing the yearly total to 844 visitations. That total is the highest since the program’s inception in the 2004-05 academic year.

Kylee Stanley of Alliance and Brian Rochelle of Casper, Wyo., were the recipients of the Platinum Eagle Awards during Ivy Day at Chadron State College on Saturday. The Platinum Eagles are presented annually to one male and one female for “distinguished leadership and service.” A student-faculty committee makes the selections. For just the second time in the 88-year history of Ivy Day at Chadron State College, two queens were crowned during the ceremony in Memorial Hall Saturday afternoon. Twenty-four Chadron State College students who have been majoring in science programs have been accepted into professional schools beginning this fall, it was announced Thursday night during the annual Health Professions Honors Banquet at the Country Kitchen Restaurant. Dr. Kelvin Sharp, a graduate of Chadron State College who is president of South Plains College of Texas, will return to his alma mater to deliver the spring commencement address. Valentine students score most points at CSC Scholastic Contest

For the second year in a row, students from Valentine scored the most points at the High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday. This was the 48th year the contest has taken place. Approximately 1,500 students participated. Valentine, which won Division III, barely nipped Rapid City Stevens, the Division I winner, for the most overall points. Valentine scored 50.740 and Stevens scored 50.727.

Dr. Kim Madsen, director of the Chadron State College Child Development Center, received special recognition at the annual conference of the National Coalition of Campus Children’s Centers in Washington, D.C., March 5-8. She was honored for outstanding leadership as a director of campus child care.

A Chadron State College assistant professor of education, Dr. Arthur Borgemenke, has been selected to present a paper at the 19th annual Conference-within-a-Conference, an event of the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration. The conference will be April 4-8 at Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Joel Hyer, Chadron State College associate professor of history, kicked off a series of lectures related to Lewis and Clark last week by telling an audience about the lives of American Indians on the Northern Plains before the explorers’ westward journey. Hyer said the arrival of Lewis and Clark, which happened at the start of the 19th century, signifies the beginning of major changes for American Indians.

Art on display in Memorial Hall

Visitors to Chadron State College’s Memorial Hall main gallery will have the opportunity to view a variety of artwork between now and the end of the semester. On display now are more than 30 oil paintings by Simon Huelsbeck of Rochester, Minn. Huelsbeck’s publicity material says that he twists historical themes and subjects while referencing traditional painting as it relates to his identity.

Woodwind recital to feature classical numbers

Classical music will be presented by the Chadron State College music department during its woodwind chamber music recital Wednesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium of the Sandoz Center. The concert is open to the public free of charge. Three ensembles and five soloists will present music by classical composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Vivaldi, Moussorgsky, Milhaud, Schumann and Lutoslawski.

Plants will headline Sandoz Society Conference

Something new — a combined conference of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum — will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday March 27–29 at Chadron State College. The program will be open to the public, but it is especially designed for devotees of Sandoz’s works, gardeners at all levels, landowners, homeowners, horticulturists and those new to the region.

History Day is Saturday

Thirty-eight high school and elementary students from Dawes and Sioux counties will compete in Nebraska’s western district section of the National History Day competition at Chadron State College on Saturday, March 15. The competition begins at 9 a.m. in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center and is expected to end before noon. The awards ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m.

Mike Her Many Horses, an independent scholar from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, will speak about finding Crazy Horse’s relatives during a presentation at Chadron State College on Tuesday, March 18. The presentation will be in room 108 of the Reta King Library at 7 p.m. as part of the Dorset Graves Lecture Series.

Marsalis to play jazz at Chadron State

Chadron State College will be all jazzed up Saturday, March 15. New Orleans jazz musician Delfeayo Marsalis and his quintet will perform in Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m. Earlier in the day, the Chadron State music department will play host to the Jazz Festival for high school students.

Chess tournament is Saturday at CSC

The 26th annual Chadron State College Chess Open will be Saturday, March 15, in the upstairs lobby of the Kline Center. The tournament is open to any chess player. Dr. Ron Miller, a CSC professor who is organizing the tournament, said participants should bring standard chess pieces and board, and, if available, a chess clock. He said they should arrive before 10 a.m.

Chadron bands to combine for concert

The bands in the Chadron Public Schools will join with the Chadron State College wind symphony to present a concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 in Memorial Hall. Approximately 180 musicians will be involved. There will be no admission charge. Joe Rischling is the director of the Chadron Schools’ bands and Dr. Adam Lambert directs the Chadron State ensemble.

Alaska school coming for Teacher Interview Day

Chadron State College continues to build on its Alaska connection. One of the 34 schools registered for the annual Teacher Interview Day at CSC on Friday, March 14, is the Northern Slope Borough School District of Barrow, Alaska. Janet Hartman, CSC internship and career services office assistant, said the district from Alaska’s northern coast is seeking elementary teachers.

Two groups from Chadron State College will travel to opposite ends of North America during Spring Break, but lounging on a sandy beach isn’t on the agenda. Concert pianist coming to Memorial Hall

Petronel Malan, a critically-acclaimed concert pianist who made her symphony debut in her preteens, will put on a show at Chadron State College's Memorial Hall. It will be Monday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the public free of charge. Malan, who now lives in Texas, was born in 1974 to a political and musical family in South Africa where she started studying the piano at age 4. She performed with the Johannesburg Symphony at age 10.

About 90 students from Dawes County’s elementary schools participated in Science Day at Chadron State College on Monday. In addition to participating in hands-on science activities created and administered by Chadron State College teacher education students, the children listened to presentations by David Nieves of Bellevue, a children’s book author who travels far and wide to study reptiles and amphibians.

Forty-three students are candidates for the annual Winter Magic Formal royalty competition at Chadron State College this week. CSC's clubs and organizations have nominated 23 women and 20 men who are juniors or seniors. The king, queen and their court are being chosen by a vote of the student body which began Monday and ends Friday. The winners will be announced during Saturday night’s dance in the Student Center.

Saddle up for CSC cowboy vacation

Young and old are being rounded up for a cowboy adventure in the scenic Pine Ridge country of northwest Nebraska this summer. Chadron State College’s family learning vacation program, “Walk in Their Boots: The Cowboy Life,” will be presented June 23-26. Participants will learn cowboy skills at a working ranch, prepare cowboy “grub” with a chuckwagon cook, take in the region’s rich history, kick up their heels at a barn dance and listen to cowboy songs around the campfire.

Exhibit features work of Colorado artists

Two exhibits at Chadron State College’s Memorial Hall are featuring the work of a pair of Colorado artists who specialize in three-dimensional art. The work of Richard and Lauren Lipinski Eisen of Millikin, Colo., went on display in Memorial Hall on Monday. Richard Eisen said his work is the product of many eclectic sources, some of which are architectural and religious. He said that his work elevates certain industrial artifacts to an “icon-like” status.
