Marx family receives CSC Family Tree Award

CHADRON – Leta Dreyer Marx of Rushville, Nebraska, is the matriarch of our next Family Tree Award. She attended the teacher education program at CSC from 1951 through 1959. After teaching school for a few years, she has been her husband, Arlan’s hired hand for 55 years, herding cows, running errands and preparing meals for him and their sons, Neal and Gale.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Senator Adam Morfeld’s (District 46) LB 439, which grants limited legal immunity to minors seeking help for themselves or someone else in need of immediate attention due to alcohol poisoning, officially took effect Aug. 30. The law will only apply to an individual who: (1) is experiencing an alcohol overdose; (2) calls for medical assistance; and (3) stays on the scene and cooperates fully with law enforcement when medical attention arrives. Four West Court buildings demolished, Military/Veteran Resource Center opens

CHADRON – While construction was being completed on the east side of Chadron State College’s campus this summer, four West Court structures containing 10 apartments were being demolished on the west side. The units were constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s but they were demolished as part of the first step in a three-year plan to remove the housing complex, according to Dale Grant, vice president of administration and finance. Asbestos abatement was completed prior to the demolition.

Coughlin publishes first book of poetry

CHADRON – Dr. Steve Coughlin is having quite a year. Not only did Coughlin, an assistant professor of English, wrap up his inaugural year of teaching at Chadron State College, but his first book of poetry, “Another City,” was recently published. The 28 poems in the book reflect multifaceted reverberations of trauma upon family relationships. One dates back to his undergraduate career, but most have been written within the past three years.

Nobel Prize winner with area roots dies at 91

Nobel prize winner Dr. Val Fitch, who was born and spent his boyhood on a ranch in the Merriman area, was the valedictorian of the Class of 1940 at Gordon High School and attended Chadron State College for two years and a summer before joining the Army during World War II, died on Thursday, Feb. 5 in Princeton, N.J. He was 91.

Former music professor dies

Dr. Jackson Hammitt, music professor at Chadron State College from the fall of 1967 through the spring of 2001, died early this week in Houston, Texas, where he and his wife, Peggy, were returning from a Caribbean cruise. Memorial services are pending. He was 76.
