CHADRON – Dalton Nelsen, a Chadron State College alum, was awarded the Spirit of Community Service Award at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Faculty Senate annual meeting in April. The award recognizes faculty members who have used expertise, resources, talent and time outside their UNMC duties to provide community service.
Originally from Callaway, Nebraska, Nelsen earned his bachelor's degree from CSC and was a member of the Rural Health Opportunities Program. He enrolled in medical school at UNMC in 2012, completed his emergency medicine residency in 2016, and completed his emergency ultrasound fellowship in 2019.
Nelsen is an Assistant Professor at UNMC Department of Emergency Medicine and CEO for a nonprofit organization called Health Equity in Action League (HEAL) Omaha. According to Dr. Joyce Hardy, CSC professor of biological sciences, Nelsen helps provide medicine to the Omaha homeless population, taking medicine to the streets, gas station bathrooms, and homeless shelters as part of HEAL Omaha.
Hardy said she is grateful for Nelsen’s passion and is proud of the difference he continues to make in the world.
“Chadron State College has a legacy of providing the knowledge, skills, and awareness that opens opportunities for our alums, and we have alumni who power through those opportunities and make a true difference in our world. I am so grateful for Dalton’s passion and outreach,” Hardy said.
