Chadron State College alumnus Dr. Ken Emonds was on a mission last week. He used his time as a visiting scholar at his alma mater to educate people about the field of orthomolecular medicine, which has become his career and passion during the past 30 years.

The U.S. attorney for Nebraska, Mike Heavican, will speak at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16 in the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center at Chadron State College as part of the Constitution Day observance at CSC this weekend. Heavican’s topic will be “The Patriot Act and the Constitution.” The program will be open to the public without charge.

A victim of Hurricane Katrina is now a freshman at Chadron State College. Tiffany Wiegel of Gulf Port, Miss., began attending classes at CSC on Wednesday, thankful that she was able to flee the destruction left by one of the worst disasters in the nation’s history.

Lee Miller has joined the faculty at Chadron State College as an assistant professor of composition and rhetoric. Miller is a native of the Dallas area, and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Abilene Christian University. He has completed work on all but the dissertation for his doctorate at Texas Women’s University in Dallas.

A limited number of tickets are still available for the presentation by the nation’s Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser of Lincoln, Thursday night at Chadron State College. Kooser will be reading his poetry at 7:30 in Memorial Hall. The tickets may be obtained through the CSC box office in Memorial Hall.

Fifty-five students completed work on degrees at Chadron State College this summer. While CSC does not have a commencement at the end of the summer term, the recent graduates are encouraged to participate in the graduation exercises in December.

A new humanities professor has begun working at Chadron State College. Jonathan Austad replaces Dr. Robert Doxtator, who is beginning a phased retirement after teaching at the college since 1968.

The Sheldon Statewide Exhibit has opened in Memorial Hall. It is titled “Who Is Imitating Whom? Photography and Photorealism in Art.” The show focuses on the intertwined relationships between photography and photorealism in art. It will remain open through Sept. 16. The gallery hours are from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. each weekday.

Nebraska State College System Chancellor Stan Carpenter said students affected by Hurricane Katrina will be granted special admission for the fall semester at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges. College officials will also assist the students with housing needs and provide complimentary rooms contingent upon availability.
