Chadron State College’s student newspaper, The Eagle, earned second place for general excellence among the state’s college news publications during the annual Nebraska Press Association convention Saturday, April 23. In addition, the Eagle won three individual third-place awards.

Dave Heineman was a happy governor while visiting Chadron Thursday afternoon. He said Nebraska has an educational system that is among the nation’s best and applauded the Nebraska Legislature’s Revenue Committee for approving a business incentive plan earlier in the day.

Six Chadron State College students were recognized for outstanding campus involvement during an afternoon ceremony Tuesday. Elisa Wickman, a freshman from Eli, Neb., was the top point-getter among students competing for the annual STRIVE awards – an acronym created from the words success, teaching, responsibility, initiative, volunteering and excellence.

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman will meet constituents during a Chadron visit Thursday (April 28). The hour-long session, which is open to the public, will be at the Chicoine Atrium of Chadron State College’s Sandoz Center beginning at 2:30 p.m.

There was good news to report when Chadron State College’s ELITE program had its annual recognition social Tuesday. Dr. Rex Cogdill, the interim project director of the CSC Student Support Services program, announced that the U.S. Department of Education recently funded CSC’s effort for another grant cycle which begins this September and ends in August 2009.

The final concert of the school year at Chadron State College will be Thursday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. It will feature the instrumental jazz ensemble directed by Dr. Sandy Schaefer and the vocal jazz ensemble directed by Dr. Joel Schreuder. Several of the numbers were performed by the CSC groups last week at the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Festival in Greeley.

There are approximately 270 candidates for degrees at Chadron State College this spring. The graduate commencement will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7 in Memorial Hall while the undergraduate program will follow at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Armstrong Building.

A junior at Chadron High School, Casey Schuhmacher, was the overall winner of the senior division Round Robin Showmanship Contest sponsored by the Ag Club at Chadron State College on Saturday, April 18. Twenty-two youths participated.

The revised edition of the book on the history of Cuny Table will come off the presses this week. Those wishing to purchase copies won’t have to wait long. A signing by the author, Virginia Kain Lautenschlager, will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

Six entries that were winners at the Western Nebraska History Day hosted by Chadron State College on March 18 placed first or second at the recent state contest in Lincoln and are eligible to advance to the national competition at College Park, Md., in June. Four of the western Nebraska entries won firsts at the state contest, which took place April 16 at Nebraska Wesleyan, and two more placed second.
