CHADRON – Two students from Chadron State College, Mekenna Fisher of Hershey, Nebraska, and Markus Ramsey of Minden, Nebraska, won championships at the 2023 Collegiate National Leadership Conference of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) in Atlanta June 22-25. Five other CSC students placed in the top 10 at the national event that attracted more than 800 college students and educators from the U.S. for workshops and networking opportunities.

CHADRON – Fifteen high school students learned more about mental health careers by participating in the Frontier Area Rural Mental-health (FARM) Camp at Chadron State College in June. This year, students and alumni attended from Chadron, Gordon, Rushville, Hemingford, Bayard, Grant, Valentine, and Lodgepole.

CHADRON – A wide range of attendees, including professional writers, retirees, casual writers, faculty from several colleges, CSC students, and more than a half dozen Western Colorado University students attended the annual Story Catcher Writing Workshop and Festival June 6-9 at Custer State Park hosted by the Sandoz Society. Faculty members represented a range of indigenous cultures.

CHADRON – A report released this summer from Project Strive at Chadron State College shows 12 years of positive trends for three indicators of student success. The factors are persistence or retention, good standing or a GPA above 2.0, and graduation rate.

CHADRON – In April, Chadron State College student Corey Griffin of Omaha won the Best Undergraduate Presentation in Geoscience at the Nebraska Academy of Sciences (NAS) conference for his Analysis of Know Your Well Data on NUREP Data to Understand Changes in Groundwater Contamination. Griffin is a double major in environmental geoscience and studio art. NUREP was the 1980 Nebraska-South Dakota Uranium Resource Evaluation Project conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy.

CHADRON – At least in what might be called modern times, Gary Bieganski of Chadron has set a record. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State College System for 16 years, longer than any of the 15 other trustees from western Nebraska since the 1950s.

CHADRON – The Mari Sandoz Center has announced the opening of an art show including a variety of still life, abstract, portrait, and landscape pastel drawings by the late Marilyn Belschner. Celebrating Color and Light: The Art of Marilyn Belschner opened May 22 and will close Sept. 6. The public is invited to a reception Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
