An art exhibit featuring the work of about a dozen Chadron State College employees will be shown at Memorial Hall beginning next week. The exhibit “They’re Artists, Too” will kick off with a public reception 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14. The work will be shown in the main gallery through Wednesday, March 2.

One of the main reasons the Lewis and Clark expedition of 200 years ago was successful was because the explorers ate well, particularly while traveling in the Midwest, an audience at Chadron State College was told this week. The speaker, Mary Gunderson, practices palecuisineology, a word she coined to describe bringing history alive through cooking. The director of bands at Chadron State College the past 34 years, Dr. William Winkle, has announced that he will retire at the end of the spring semester. Winkle said he’s had a rewarding career, one that he’d largely duplicate if he could start it all over again.

An updated version of the Greek tragedy “Antigone” will be presented this weekend by the Theater Department at Chadron State College. It will go on stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-12 and 2 p.m,. Sunday, Feb. 13 in the Black Box Theater of Memorial Hall.

The availability of water in the Panhandle will be the topic at the Distinguished Speaker Series presentation tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 8) at 7 p.m. in the Student Center at Chadron State College. Daryl Davis, a race relations author and piano man, captivated an audience at Chadron State College on Monday night with stories of his head-on approach to racism. Davis has become known for setting up surprise meetings with Ku Klux Klan leaders who were unaware of his skin color and attending KKK rallies to promote dialogue.

Chadron emergency crews responded Friday morning when the fire sprinkler on the fifth floor of Chadron State College’s High Rise residence hall soaked about six rooms on the floor’s west side and spread water to several rooms below.

Future Chadron State College students will now be able to register for courses and attend orientation sessions in early March at sites throughout western Nebraska. In addition to three orientations at the CSC campus, college personnel plan to conduct sessions at Gordon, Alliance, Scottsbluff, Ogallala, Sidney and Atkinson.
