Chadron emergency crews responded Friday morning when the fire sprinkler on the fifth floor of Chadron State College’s High Rise residence hall soaked about six rooms on the floor’s west side and spread water to several rooms below.

Future Chadron State College students will now be able to register for courses and attend orientation sessions in early March at sites throughout western Nebraska. In addition to three orientations at the CSC campus, college personnel plan to conduct sessions at Gordon, Alliance, Scottsbluff, Ogallala, Sidney and Atkinson.

The University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Chadron State College will present a workshop this month to help farm and ranch families accomplish smooth business succession. “Returning to the Farm” will be presented at the Chadron State College Student Center during two weekends, Feb. 18-19 and Feb. 25-26.

More than 280 high school students from the four-state area have been selected to participate at the 33rd annual High Plains Band and Chorus Festival at Chadron State College on Monday and Tuesday, Feb, 7-8.

“Water Quantity Issues in the Panhandle” will be the topic is the first Distinguished Speaker Series presentation of the spring semester at Chadron State College. The program will be at 7 p.m, Tuesday, Feb. 8 in the Student Center. No admission will be charged.

The search for a new president at Chadron State College continues. Stan Carpenter, executive director of the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges, told the Chadron State employees Tuesday morning that none of the three finalists for the position who visited the campus last week will fill the position.

A well-known food writer, lecturer and culinary historian, Mary Gunderson of Yankton, S.D., will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 in the Student Center at Chadron State College. No admission will be charged.

The Chadron State College Students In Free Enterprise team won the organization’s regional case study competition Thursday through Saturday. The event was at the campus of Metropolitan State University in Denver. Chadron State’s team defeated clubs from Colorado State-Pueblo, Kansas State, University of California Chico, Newman University and Pepperdine University.

Daryl Davis of Silver Spring, Md., who has become known for his unique approach to race relations, will speak at Chadron State College on Monday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. The presentation at the Student Center will be free and open to the public. Davis, who is black, will tell stories of setting up surprise meetings with Ku Klux Klan leaders who were unaware of his skin color and attending KKK rallies to promote dialogue.

Jessi Moore of Chadron and Brandon Doke of Ainsworth were crowned Chadron State’s Winter Magic Formal queen and king on Saturday night. Moore and Doke, who are dating each other, were chosen by a vote of Chadron State’s students. There were 43 candidates for the honor.
