CHADRON – Chadron State College has successfully distributed the funds provided by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to 458 students. Beginning in May, Chadron State began distributing the funds, and by June 1, the institution had granted $540,638 for students’ financial relief. The CARES Act funds for student relief were intended to cover increased home technology costs, food insecurity, travel expenses, health care, and childcare for students.

CHADRON – The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) Board reviewed and approved Chadron State College and Wayne State College’s eligibility application to begin the proposed combined nutrition degree program in March.

CHADRON – This summer, students can earn credit in a summer course focused on service learning. Dr. Matt Evertson, who teaches Learning to Serve scheduled to begin June 8, said he is encouraging students who enroll to pursue projects related to the current health crisis.

CHADRON – After being closed to the public since March 17, Chadron State College will allow the public on campus in selected facilities beginning Monday, June 1. The buildings open to the public are the Nelson Physical Activity Center, the King Library, the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, and Crites Hall. The buildings are open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., unless they have other posted hours.

CHADRON – Chadron High School junior Katelyn Diehl used her time during the unusual spring 2020 semester constructively. While studying at home due to closure of Chadron Public Schools, she sewed more than 140 fabric masks and donated them to Chadron State College and the Chadron Community Hospital.

CHADRON – Traditionally, the Chadron State College Health Professions staff and faculty host an awards banquet each April to honor students who have been accepted by professional schools. This year, however, that was not possible due to public health recommendations. Director of the CSC Health Professions Program Kristal Kuhnel said it was difficult not having that opportunity for closure.

CHADRON – Each spring, Chadron State College Blue Key and Cardinal Key national honor societies host an event called Ivy Day that include academic awards for seniors graduating in May and the previous December. This year, due to safety precautions to avoid spread of COVID-19, Ivy Day was one of many postponed campus activities. Ivy Day honors senior students who have excelled academically and each academic program recognizes its outstanding scholars.
