“Meet and greet with a musher” isn’t a normal item on a course syllabus, but this week is anything but normal for a group of 14 Chadron State College students. They arrived in Alaska February 28 with faculty members Chuck Butterfield, Ann Petersen and Karen Enos and will return to the Lower 48 on March 10.

Shaunda French's Media Law class reached out to children in Kenwood elementary school March 1 to promote reading. The effort was part of the National Education Association's Read Across America campaign. "I think it's important for our students to engage with the community in service like this. I required it as part of my mid-term," said French.

Incoming student participants in the collaborative Rural Health Opportunities Program between Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska Medical Center have been named. Jill Mack, director of Health Programs and RHOP at CSC said, “They are a great group of students and we look forward to having them here in August.”

“Life-changing” was the way Tad Henkenius described his experience on the Chadron State College Study Away Alaska 2013 trip. The Rangeland Management major from Neligh, Neb. said the highlights for him were intercultural exchanges, handling the Iditarod race dogs and visiting the Beryozova School which serves the Old Believers Russian community.

New tree planting, pruning, and placement will be the topics of the next Chadron State College Campus Arboretum Volunteers work day. CSC horticulturist Lucinda Mays said, “Trees start out small but they can take over a yard in just a few years. A well-placed shade tree can save about $250 a year on heating and cooling a home.”

Chadron State College's partnership with the Kaleidoscope Open Course Initiative received national attention this week as Dr. Charles Snare, vice president of academic affairs was quoted in an article about Open Educational Resources that appeared on the Yahoo Finance web page and in other similar publications. This week has been designated as Open Education Week.
