Chadron State College graduate, Dr. Marty Ramirez, will be among those honored at the Lincoln Celebration of Community Leadership dinner. The program was originally scheduled for Feb. 21, but because of the weather in Lincoln, was postponed until March 8.

“How many of you have been called a genius, as a sincere compliment, lately?” This question by keynote speaker, Holly Elissa Bruno of Sterling, Mass., kicked off the discussion about Intelligence Quotient vs. Emotional Quotient Saturday morning at the 24thannual Early Childhood Conference hosted at Chadron State College. “We have a profession that we know is important but the rest of the world doesn't really get it,” she told childcare providers from the region.

Chadron State College faculty members are seeking five grants totaling over $250,000. The largest application, for $150,000, is intended to enhance students’ experience using GPS and Geographic Information Systems. Employers expect job applicants to demonstrate a proficiency level with GPS/GIS that could be reached with a technologically strengthened rangeland and agricultural curriculum, according to Dr. Chuck Butterfield, professor and department chair of Applied Sciences.

The CSC Graves Lecture Series speaker tonight is Dr. Tom Smith, an historian and assistant professor in the Social and Communication Arts department at CSC. The title of his talk is “Empire, Manliness and Post-Emancipated Identity: Progressive Pan-Africanism at the Turn of the Twentieth Century.”

Bev Russell, interim library director, sees herself and other CSC library staff members as “information navigators”. Russell has three goals she wants to accomplish before her contract at the Reta E. King library ends June 30. First, she wants to make the learning commons a reality both in the building and online.

In honor of those who fought to defend the Philippines, Franklin Annis of the Chadron State College Army ROTC Program and Sarah Polak of the CSC Museum Studies Program are teaching a Military Science Leadership course this semester centered on the Bataan Death March.

“Meet and greet with a musher” isn’t a normal item on a course syllabus, but this week is anything but normal for a group of 14 Chadron State College students. They arrived in Alaska February 28 with faculty members Chuck Butterfield, Ann Petersen and Karen Enos and will return to the Lower 48 on March 10.

Shaunda French's Media Law class reached out to children in Kenwood elementary school March 1 to promote reading. The effort was part of the National Education Association's Read Across America campaign. "I think it's important for our students to engage with the community in service like this. I required it as part of my mid-term," said French.

Incoming student participants in the collaborative Rural Health Opportunities Program between Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska Medical Center have been named.
