Dr. Ron Miller, the professor who has taught most of Chadron State College’s sociology courses the past 32 years, drew from concepts of his discipline while delivering the keynote address at CSC’s commencement ceremony for students receiving master’s and specialist’s degrees Saturday. Miller said that knowledge leads to success, and that it’s important for people to realize organizational structures in order to be successful.

Chadron State College alumnus Kelvin Sharp, president of South Plains College of Texas, used a familiar acronym to guide CSC graduates Saturday. While speaking at his alma mater’s commencement ceremony in Armstrong Gym, Sharp used the letters C-S-C to offer guidance to the graduates.

For just the second time in the 88-year history of Ivy Day at Chadron State College, two queens were crowned during the ceremony in Memorial Hall Saturday afternoon. The event honors the college’s outstanding senior scholars. Voting by the student body left Nicole Hagan of Ogallala and Megan Pelton of Chadron with the same number of votes. Thus, they became co-queens. The king is Tyler Dickey of Morrill.

Chadron State College has revised its schedule for end-of-the-year ceremonies because of the snowstorm that blanketed the region. Ivy Day has been moved from tonight to noon Saturday. It will be in Armstrong Gym instead of Memorial Hall.

Following another strong showing at regionals, the Chadron State College SIFE team is getting ready for national competition. For the ninth consecutive year the CSC SIFE team returned as regional champions after participating in the SIFE USA Regional Competition at Denver, Colo. The event was one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions across the United States in March and April.

More than 30 employees of Chadron State College received special recognition Friday night during the institution’s annual faculty and staff recognition banquet in the Student Center. Dr. Chuck Butterfield, professor of range management, received he Teaching Excellence Award, which is presented annually to the institution’s outstanding educator. Other candidates for the honor were Dr. Phil Cary, professor of mathematics, and Dr. Wendy Waugh, professor of business and economics.

Twenty-four Chadron State College students who have been majoring in science programs have been accepted into professional schools beginning this fall, it was announced Thursday night during the annual Health Professions Honors Banquet at the Country Kitchen Restaurant. Ten of the students are in the Rural Health Opportunities Program, a joint venture with the University of Nebraska Medical Center that is designed to provide health care professionals for rural communities in the state.

Fifty-nine seniors at Nebraska high schools have accepted Board of Trustees Scholarships to attend Chadron State College beginning this fall. In addition, 13 more seniors from Nebraska have accepted Gold Presidential Scholarships.
