For the second year in a row, students from Valentine scored the most points at the High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday. This was the 48th year the contest has taken place. Approximately 1,500 students participated. Valentine, which won Division III, barely nipped Rapid City Stevens, the Division I winner, for the most overall points. Valentine scored 50.740 and Stevens scored 50.727.

Chadron State College's Dorset Graves Lecture Series will present two speakers about Lewis and Clark next week. The first will be Kira Gale of Omaha, whose topic is “The Mysterious Death of Meriwether Lewis: Murder or Suicide?” Gale’s presentation will be on the second floor of the Reta King Library at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6.

Chadron State College’s series of Lewis and Clark speakers continued Tuesday night with a presention by Dr. James Hanson. The Chadron historian made his presentation to a jam-packed audience of about 50 people in room 108 of the Reta King Library.

More than 1,500 students from 51 high schools in Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming are entered in the 48th annual Inter-High School Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday. Dr. Janie Park, president of Chadron State, said the scholastic contest is a time-honored tradition that recognizes the academic achievements and talents of high school students from throughout the region. The CSC contest is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the Midwest.

Two Panhandle community chorus groups will join to present concerts in their respective cities Sunday. Chadron Community Chorus and the Alliance Community Chorus will perform a joint concert Sunday, April 6, at 3 p.m. at the Chadron Arts Center. The two groups will then travel to Alliance to put on a show that night.

“Release,” the variety show in Memorial Hall this weekend, will include performances by artists who are known locally, and some who are being recognized nationally. The artists will range from about the age of 5 to about 50. The show’s expected to include songs that are incredibly uplifting, and those sad enough to bring tears.

Judy McDonald, retired dean of the College of Arts and Letters at Bemidji State University in Minnesota, was presented the “In the Spirit of Mari Sandoz Award” Friday night during the dinner that concluded the combined meeting of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum at Chadron State College. Presentation of the award was made by Lynn Roper of Lincoln, president of the society.
