A Chadron State College assistant professor of education, Dr. Arthur Borgemenke, has been selected to present a paper at the 19th annual Conference-within-a-Conference, an event of the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration. The conference will be April 4-8 at Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. Joel Hyer, Chadron State College associate professor of history, kicked off a series of lectures related to Lewis and Clark last week by telling an audience about the lives of American Indians on the Northern Plains before the explorers’ westward journey. Hyer said the arrival of Lewis and Clark, which happened at the start of the 19th century, signifies the beginning of major changes for American Indians.

Visitors to Chadron State College’s Memorial Hall main gallery will have the opportunity to view a variety of artwork between now and the end of the semester. On display now are more than 30 oil paintings by Simon Huelsbeck of Rochester, Minn. Huelsbeck’s publicity material says that he twists historical themes and subjects while referencing traditional painting as it relates to his identity.

Classical music will be presented by the Chadron State College music department during its woodwind chamber music recital Wednesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium of the Sandoz Center. The concert is open to the public free of charge. Three ensembles and five soloists will present music by classical composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Vivaldi, Moussorgsky, Milhaud, Schumann and Lutoslawski.

Something new — a combined conference of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum — will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday March 27–29 at Chadron State College. The program will be open to the public, but it is especially designed for devotees of Sandoz’s works, gardeners at all levels, landowners, homeowners, horticulturists and those new to the region.

Thirty-eight high school and elementary students from Dawes and Sioux counties will compete in Nebraska’s western district section of the National History Day competition at Chadron State College on Saturday, March 15. The competition begins at 9 a.m. in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center and is expected to end before noon. The awards ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m.

Mike Her Many Horses, an independent scholar from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, will speak about finding Crazy Horse’s relatives during a presentation at Chadron State College on Tuesday, March 18.
