Commencement at Chadron State College last Friday night had a couple of firsts. One was the presentation of the colors by the War Eagle Company, the ROTC Unit at Chadron State, and another was the marriage proposal made by graduate Michael Schumacher of Sidney to his long-time sweetheart, Lauren Hiers, at the end of the exercises.

The November issue of “The Instrumentalist” contains an article by Chadron State College woodwind instructor Carola Winkle. The article entitled “Good Clarinet Tone” focuses on basic embouchure and playing habits that are essential in achieving a good sound on the clarinet. Published in Chicago, “The Instrumentalist” is often regarded as the foremost journal in instrumental music.

The case of the missing mathematics professor at Chadron State College entered its second week early on Tuesday with still no clues concerning his whereabouts. Dr. Steve Haataja (pronounced Hah-dee-ya) was reported missing late Monday, Dec. 4 and has not been seen or heard from since.

A Chadron State College team recently won possession of the Rangeland Cup traveling trophy by placing first in competition at the Wyoming Section of the Society for Range Management meetings in Sheridan.

Members of the team were Craig Eddie of Ogallala, Kimmy Mott of Fullerton, Dan Ruterbories of Ord and Jenny Walker of Edgemont, S.D. Their mentor is Dr. Chuck Butterfield, associate professor of agriculture at CSC. Besides winning the large trophy, the CSC team received $500 to help pay its way to the international competition in Reno, Nev., in February. The competition is open to all colleges and universities.
