Music that once flourished throughout Europe, then nearly became extinct will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 in Memorial Hall as part of Chadron State College’s Galaxy Series. The concert will be given by the Shirim Klezmer Band from Boston.

Waddie Mitchell remembers that he grew up listening to the cowboy way of entertaining—the art of spinning tales in rhyme and meter that came to be called cowboy poetry. That was on remote Nevada ranches where his father worked.

Some of the West’s outstanding artists have works on display at the Western Art Show and Sale that is taking place in conjunction with the second annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering at Chadron State College.

They’ve sung in Carnegie Hall and China, and this Friday night, Jan. 19, they’ll sing in Memorial Hall at Chadron State College. They are the Prairie Rose Wranglers, a trio that formed in 1999 to entertain at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper located 15 miles northeast of east of Wichita, Kan. The three are “Ultra Slim” Orin Friesen, “Tennessee” Jim Farrell and “Cyclone” Stu Stuart.

Rehearsals for the Chadron Community Chorus will begin in Memorial Hall at Chadron State College at 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday, Jan. 11) and continue on Thursday evenings (with the exception of March 8) until the concert, which will be on Sunday, April 15 at the Chadron Arts Center.

The Dorset Graves Lecture Series at Chadron State College will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. in the basement of the King Library. The programs are open to the public without charge.

The Bordeaux Community Band will begin rehearsing for its spring concert this coming week. The first session will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 in Memorial Hall. Rehearsals will follow each Tuesday evening until the concert on Sunday, March 18. The director, Carola Winkle, said the theme this spring will be “Past, Present and Future.”

One of the major events of the spring semester at Chadron State College will be the second annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering on Saturday, Jan. 20. Taking place in conjunction with the gathering will be a Western Art Show and Sale on Friday and Saturday and performances by two well-known musical groups Friday evening.
