A former Chadron State College staff member has received a special honor. Dr. Tom Henry, chancellor of the Mohave Community College based at Kingman, Ariz., has been Community College Chief Executive Officer of the Year for the Pacific Region by the Association of Community College Trustees.

A large crowd at Chadron State College got a pep talk Wednesday night on what it means to be an American. Betty Nguyen (pronounced Win), an anchor for CNN’s weekend programs, said there are thousands of people around the world who would give anything to come to the United States. She noted that the United States is the land of opportunity and freedom, and people who live in countries where it is almost impossible to break the cycle of poverty are desperate to come to America.

A Hemingford teacher who graduated from Chadron State College received a special award last week. Cindy Lanik was honored by the U.S. Department of Education as Nebraska’s American Star of Teaching for 2006. This is the third year the award has been given. It goes to just one educator in each state. There reportedly were about 4,000 nominees in Nebraska.

A member of the Chadron State College music faculty, Carola Winkle, is the new president of the International Music Camp. The camp is located in the International Peace Gardens on the border between North Dakota and Manitoba.

A news anchor for CNN, Betty Nguyen (pronounced Win), will be the first speaker of the fall semester in the Distinguished Speaker Series at Chadron State College. Her presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 in the Student Center. Her topic will be “Diversity: Don’t Hide From It, Celebrate It.”
